Here's what most impressed me about Lawyer Ron today slow time aside, he was jostled heavily going into the first turn, got very rank down the backside causing his jockey to near choke the race out of him and he still managed to win impressively. He's seasoned. Trouble doesn't bother him and in the Rebel he showed he could rate. Times aside I think he's the most credible of the early favorites (Brother Derek, Barbaro, and the little Lawyer).

he seemed to bear out a bit at the top of the stretch, was that just a product of switching leads? but then he straightened it out, what do you make of that?

while I'm at it I might as well throw this in: I dont like any of the closers in the derby. Pt. Determined does not look like he has the will to pass horses, STeppenwolfer seems to make his move too late but that could change at 10f; Deputy Glitters is not in top class; Red Raymond did not do it today; Jazil, I think more of an illusion, muddy track also confuses things, leaders came home in like 28...Who does that leave Strong Contender???

I have liked Lawyer Ron since the Southwest victory. At first I thought it was just sentimental. I could not really justify to myself why I wanted him to be a Derby horse. Now, I have figured out the attraction for me. Lawyer Ron is probably not the most talented horse in the field, nor is he the fastest. He is however, perhaps the one with the most determination. He showed me yesterday that he will definitely give it his best. He reminds me of another gutsy horse that I like, Wilco. I think that Lawyer Ron just might run beyond himself on the first Saturday in May. Of course, the race is not over until they actually run it.

I forget the actual splits but I think he got the mile in 1:37 3/5 giving him a last eighth in 13 4/5. I could have sworn he went the last 1/8 faster. I tried hand timing and it appeared he got the last 1/8 in 12 4/5 to 13..

from the official chart it looks like he got the last 1/8 in 13.52 which is really not enuf, at least I would not think so on derby day. He got the mile in 1:37.76 or so it looks...Even decent closers should be able to throw a 25 sec last 1/4, if Ron is running it in 27, they could pick up 14 or so lengths. Hmm....be interesting to see if you double check on the hand timing thing...
