Rokeby,
I think its pretty obvious - their enhanced presence means their enhanced spending power into your industry. In UK they have 400 horses in training, more jobs for the industry and of great benefit to the breeding industry. Furthermore they plough money into staff training , sponsored races and as I indicated before Stallion stations which look after their customers better than anyone else in the UK.
If like me you are a small breeder ( 6 broodmares) you will soon come to see how helpful they are compared to their competitors

all joking aside, Darley is the most aggressive inovator of presserving horse racing. they have their "flying start program" if you looked into it they take out all stops to offer strangers a chance at a wonderfull life in the industry i only hope its still going when my son is a little older to apply. not that he would be chosen but just for the opportunity to apply..i think they give to the sport more than any other today. they will take your mares to their stallions, board them etc.. how many opperations offer transportation? and many want your mares kept at a pilot farm and not on their own grounds.they deffinately have my respect.

Wish they offered it for senior citizen, late-bloomer types like me

I really don't think it's fair to draw negative conclusions about these guys when many American owners or, hey, all over the world, make decisions not really thinking of the fan. Seems like plenty of folks are racing their horses less often and I don't think it's just to make money by selling yearlings to Coolmore and Dubai. I think the Maktoums realize the importance of PR because these guys are businessmen. They realize sometimes you make sacrifices for good PR and sometimes you ignore what others say about you for what you want or feel you need to do.
How many apply to this program of Darley's? Like scale of one to ten how competitive is it? It sounds like a dream to get in to that when you see what they offer.

I wonder how many females get "selected" into the program.

nythoroughbredvz wrote:actually quite a few, if you look at their stallion book, there is lots of females within their employment! im not sure but i believe it was the daughter of Mcmahon thoroughbreds in NY that got excepted a few years ago.
Which is kinda weird to know because I was just reading the Funny Cide book and it had a little section on her parents, how they met, and how they got where they were. I was trying to figure out why it seemed familiar, going "hmmm McMahon..McMahon...oh yeaaaaah." They don't seem to just pick men. Of course if you have to come from a background like she did, most of us would be shafted from the moment we applied.

Farm managers get their pet projects into the Flying Start Program. I caught a student who completely lied about their experience (because he had hardly any experience) who had gotten into the program because his boss worked for Darley at one point. Don't expect just anyone to get into the program.
All men are equal on the turf - or under it.
I am not sure you will find too many operations that take better care of their critters. I remember visiting the stallions at Shadwell with a couple friends and being asked afterward, "...have you ever seen a group of horses with such clean legs?"
I tend to think Thor's Echo may be in better hands now. You know what the career path for many geldings here in the States tends to be like.
I personally don't have a problem with the Dubai "boys" and, overall, I think they are good for racing. At least they are top horsemen in their own regard and they are not pressed in any way for money, so you have to believe they usually will make decisions in the horses best interest.
