Kentucky Derby Top 12

Postby LKR » Sat Feb 17, 2007 6:02 am

Since his maternal grandsire, Top Account is standing outside my window looking forward to the 2007 breeding season which will start today for him,
Buzz and I are certainly rooting for him. We were so pleased that he finally got to run in a graded stakes as he has been entered 2 or 3 times in
the latter part of 2006 with a stablemate and they always scratched him and let the stablemate run. When they were talking about the long stretch
run for home I knew he would have a shot as that is how he runs, on the end of his races. My heart stopped when the rider fell, it looked so bad for him at the time and I was so relieved that the horses were able to keep going. I'mawildandcrazyguy had to check once in the melee but once he was able to move he was impressive to me. As you stated, barring injury or some other setback, he should DEFINITELY improve and will make good press on the 1st Saturday in May. The TVG crew has already had some fun with it prior to the Risen Star Stakes. Frank Lyons pointed out that I'mawildandcrazyguy was out of a Top Account mare and Notional was out of a French Deputy mare. One of French Deputy's biggest upsets was when Top Account beat him at the Meadowlands. :)
I think he will like more distance too. It is a long way off but we can
dream of roses. :D

hi LKR

If snappy fractions are the order of the day at Kentucky Derby 2007, and the front-runner(s), and those pressing the pace, start backing up...things could potentially set up big time for a horse (or horses) like Imawildandcrazyguy.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the good wishes. It will be an interesting race if he gets into the starting gate.

Imawildandcrazyguy has gotten a few positive words from some. The come home time in the race was a bit slow, but it's early. And I don't consider that a huge factor, yet. I still would like to see some more races from that one. Has had a good number of races under his belt already. Could be on the radar, but others seem to be better now. Will keep an eye on him. Seems to also be a good story.

Will update Tuesday. And there does look like there will be some changes.

It's only mid-February. No chance that The Green Monkey will crack the Top 10 by March 1st, huh?

Does anyone know if the horse is still breathing?

hi Rokeby Forever

I wonder how Pletcher might deliver the news to Magnier and Tabor, if the vet suggested that gelding The Green Monkey might help resolve the colt's groin issues.

To think that Darley ALMOST bought this guy. Talk about a close call...pheeeeew.

Hi FOS,

That is a funny thought! I was wondering if Aiden O'Brien might wind up with him.

The Arabs did win every round in September...we'll see how many Coolmore can say, "Pheeeeew!!!" to!

Best,
Rokeby

The Arabs were never "close" to purchasing the colt. Its a badly kept secret the colt was purchased before the sale by Coolmore for just shy of 6 mil. The sheik found out and played quite a game with Coolmore. Coolmore is out the original purchase price, but not the 16 mil.

If it's such a "badly kept secret" (your words)...surely you can share your source? Or was the source just spinning or advancing some rumor and/or speculation?

What game are you suggesting that the sheik (as you call him) played with Coolmore?

Assuming the Coolmore boys purchased the colt for "just shy of 6 mil" (your words) prior to the auction (as you suggest), they would have profited many many millions (you do the math) if Demi O'Byrne (on behalf of team Coolmore) did not counter what turned out to be Ferguson's final bid (for the colt) of $15.5 mil. Demi O'B did counter at $16mil though, and signed the ticket.

I sense that little might have caused the Coolmore gang to chuckle more, than knowing that they had snookered Sheik Mohammed al-Maktoum (or the sheik as you call him). It's probably fair to say there's not a whole lot of love lost there.

When you illegally purchase a colt hours before the sale, and the colt goes through the ring under the original consignor/seller info, the highest bidder cant be anyone BUT the illegal purchaser for obvious reasons. They never disclosed the purchase before the sale, and put the colt in the ring as a power play... one that, in hindsight, doesnt put the shine they thought it would.

Techincally, the colt could have been bid up to 40 million, and Coolmore would have still been the one to "sign" the ticket.

Since you seem to have so many "inside" connections in Florida, it shouldnt be much issue for you to ask a few people and find out what really happened. Like I said, its one of the worst kept secrets around. You'll hear it from consignors, buyers, and farms.

I agree. The Johannes i've seen have pretty much the same aptitude as his close relative Tale of the Cat. Very fast... versatile... great up to 1 1/16, shakey after that.

He probably is....but he hasn't been nominated to the TC, so unless he catches up dramatically between now & the late nomination deadline, the point is moot.
