I think the larger East Coast claiming outfits are missing a golden opportunity. There are so many CA dirt horses that don't like the new surfaces and are running poorly - I bet several could be claimed for peanuts, shipped back East, and become nice horses.

Who's to say that a two year old maiden that's running poorly for $50,000 on the artificials is a bad horse? Maybe if that same horse ran on a dirt surface, it could win the Remsen at Aqueduct. Interesting thought, huh?

there was a horse running in mid level claimers at I want to say Del Mar... was shipped to Saratoga and won an open allowence race.

If I were these claiming outfits, I would be looking at horses that do well at Presque and Turfway.. allowence horses, and ship them out West.

But those surfaces aren't the same as the Cali surfaces...they're all different with different compositions.

good point...

humm... Well arlingtion and hollywood are pretty much the same aren't they?

Student Council did well at Keeneland's poly before going over to Del mar earlier this year.

Why Dominican isn't out in SoCal somewhere I have no idea.

It seems to me that Rokeby's well-taken point is that the horses should be shipping west to east, not east to west. There were so many claiming (and higher) horses that just did not take to the poly surface, especially at Del Mar. You I'm sure have noted the difference in form of those horses who ran poorly at Del Mar and did much better at Fairplex. Look at the Swiss Yodelers. The point of the claiming outfits grabbing a few and then running on dirt back east is that in California the opportunities for dirt racing are becoming slimmer, but the horses that are already liking the poly back east have lots of tracks to run on, and don't need to ship west to find a surface to their liking. The claiming trainers could find a "bargain" from a frustrated Calif. trainer and ship east. No point to bring a horse west that is already doing well on poly just to face others that are doing well on poly.

actually.. after a week I was done with Del Mar, I took a break from the So Cal circuit. but when I bet Hollywood or any poly, I let the horse get a race over it first before betting.

alot of the horses that were switched on to poly were dirt horses in the first place.

In other words, people are treating Poly=dirt as the only switch you can make.

Right now, Tiznow seems to be a pretty good Poly Sire. Tiznow and Mr. Greeley for some odd reason. Why not take a chance on a Tiznow that's in some mid level claimers but shown some ability and ship him west?

Treat Poly like any other surface. god dammit some horse has to like it! it's just a matter of finding otu who and capitalizing on that.

There was a horse going from Hollywood that went to Del Mar, hadn't finished better than 8th in the last 4 races, and won an allowence at Del Mar at first asking paying 125 bucks to win.

In Calif the Unusual Heats really seemed to like the poly. And the Event of the Years.
