When I was a "strapper" or groom in Australia in the 70s and early 80s i was fortunate to be associated with some wondwerful thoroughbreds including a monster named Ming Dynasty , a beautiful dappled grey with 4 white socks. He ran himself into the history books by winning the Caulfield Cup twice at 4yrs and 7yrs. These days his exploits would have netted well over $5million<Aust>.Running a horse in races such as the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups and the incredible W S Cox Plate was a drug free high that I will always remember with joy. At that time we competed against the mighty Kingston Town who remains the legend of the past 30yrs in Australia, however with Makybe Divas win in the Cox Plate earlier today there is a monster on the horizon looking to assume the crown of true greatness following her two Melbourne Cup victories. Racing is the number one year-round sport in Australia and is firmly entrenched in the Aussie consciousness. The imported stallions from North America and Europe crossing with the tough Aussie and New Zealand mares has produced some of the finest runners in history. The ease of shipping them around the world has given us a greater understanding of the horses from down -under...... I only wish that Phar Lap had such an easy passage in his annhililation of Americas best over 70 years ago................................Wilf.

Hello Bettina,

Gunsynd is undoubtedly a legend of the Australian turf, but he was not much of a sire. His greatest achievement in the breeding barn was as dam sire of one of Australias greatest ever race mares, Emancipation, winner of 19 races, 6 at G1 level. When one considers Emancipation was by Bletchingly, himself only a good race horse but later a Champion sire, Railings dam side is somewhat of a study of Australian turf legends.

Interesting to note, daughters of Emancipation have produced two significant winners in recent weeks, Caulfield Cup G1 winner Railings and G2 sprinter, Virage de Fortune.

An amazing race (over 2,040 metres) won by a champion mare Makybe Diva. Probably one of the best races ever run in Aus. Field of 15 started with 11 horses taking off in a wave at the 600m. I've never seen that before in my 30+ years of watching horse races. The Diva had them covered at the corner (250 metre mark) and just put them away in the run to the line.

It's now on to the Melbourne Cup (3,200 metres). If she starts and wins it will be her third Melbourne Cup.

She has now won over $11 million Aus (that's about $8 million+ US).
