Makybe Diva

The Damsire Sequence (Riverman over Roberto over Northern Dancer over Vaguely Noble over Amerigo over War Relic over Mahmoud over Teddy) on Makybe Diva is OUTSTANDING in the extreme and you seem to be the only person to have noticed this simple fact openly discussing it."

Thanks for your kind words. Most people just look at a pedigree, gravitating to the names that are in it and then assessing what they see, rather tnan how the horse actually came to be. By going along the tail-female line up to the horse in question, you get the effect of seeing how she was built and when she was upgraded by a mating or hurt by assessing how good was the sire and the effect he had by looking at what the mare produced.

But the question to me is: "How many people except you and me are actually smart enough to know how good Amerigo was as a sire?"

For a while, I actually was going to grant chef de race status to him, but backed off when his daughters didn't do as well as I had hoped. Even then as a broodmare sire he is positive at 1.871.82. As a sire his AEI is 4.10, how much better can you get than that. His CI is a nice 2.37. Got good mares and upgraded them. Period! You are right

"Anyway, that's where your GRASP Score comes in, I suppose your answer will be, but I wonder how many readers of your article will be smart enough to comprehend the implication (namely that you should check the GRASP scores on the sequence of damsires on a mare's damline)."

In this game of hype and spin, GRASP scores are apolitical and owe allegiance to no one. Of course, that doesn't mean that a horse got the good stuff simply because the sire was Roberto. If that were true all progeny of Roberto would be great, but they are not. On average, they are very good and that is why you look at what was produced to see how Roberto truely acted in that mating.

"One more question; why did you once say Makybe Diva's GSV is especially good "For A Filly"? I never noticed before a reason why female horses should get lower scores on average..."

I simply said that because most mares are not culled out of the breed and go off to someone's broodmare band, regardless of merit. Colts, that are still colts, usually have high GSV scores because they have breeding potential and were not cut. Geldings often have high scores too, but were cut when they didn't measure up. A lot of good females are sent off to stud without lots of starts, simply because the breeders wants a couple of extra foals from them if they are really well bred.

Hope that helps answer your questions

best, George

But you have to remember this article was written for the general public, 99% of whom wouldn't have a clue (nor would they care) about the significance of "Riverman over Roberto over Northern Dancer over Vaguely Noble over Amerigo over War Relic over Mahmoud over Teddy." They want to know the backstory on the champion, who was involved, what fortunes changed hands, and what happened before she got to the "happy ending". I think the author did a great job of explaining the characters and history surrounding Makybe Diva. It's these kind of stories that draw more people into our industry, not the disection and micro-inspection of the pedigree that some of us :::raises hand::: are so fascinated with. :D

Amen! Well said.

Hey all I don't think it's been put up, sorry if it's redundant, but here's a link I got off of the racing yahoo group I'm in that you can see Makybe Diva's race on...wow. I'd never seen her run before so this was amazing.

http://www.hkjc.com/english/replay/repl ... &speed=500

And I gotta say, having never heard her name spoken, just written, I'm a huge dork and instead of what's apparently correct (mac-EYE-bee DEE-va) I'd assumed it was sort of like (MAC-eh-bee DEE-va). Yeah now I gotta get used to the proper way. Fortunately I have other redeeming features like I never once mispronounced Fusaichi Pegasus. Foo-see-ACH-ee is sooo dumb but that's how a lot of the announcers try to do it. I say if you hear it said properly once and you keep screwing it up, you really aren't paying attention which's rude if it's a person (can you tell I'm bitter..people try to turn my last name into a dissimilar sounding first name and then get confused and call me by my mispronounced last name instead of my actual first name..grr)

Thanks Heidi for the excellent link, it was a treat for me to see the race as I missed it all and years ago I used to jog around that hallowed turf track when I lived upon the hill behind the grandstand. I believe that her odd name was derived from the parts of names belonging to ladies who work for the owner Tony Santic, a tuna fisherman of Croatian descent...........hence the racing colours similar to the Croatian flag.
