It's the Preakness Baby!

Regardless of how you feel about his methods, the man got results on a consistent level for many years. An owner would be naive to hire him and not expect any horse given would be gunned for the Classics... hell, its why he's had so many starters. People sent him horses with that in mind.
Thunder Gulch was the red-headed stepchild of the Lukas entrants that year, Charismatic was a former claimer, Grindstone was the least heralded of the Unbridled sons.
I guess by your logic, Cowtown Cat was a top tier pick for you in this year's Derby... he did win a prep after all.
And if we're going on pedigree, a Danzig colt out of a Seeking the Gold mare, out of a Spectacular Bid mare, out of a Nijinsky mare... i'd say there was room to suggest 10f wouldnt be a problem... huh!

Maven...you wrote, "And if we're going on pedigree, a Danzig colt out of a Seeking the Gold mare, out of a Spectacular Bid mare, out of a Nijinsky mare... i'd say there was room to suggest 10f wouldnt be a problem... huh!" Yeah, 10 furlongs shouldn't have been a problem (his dam won a Grade 2 turf race at the Meadowlands) - except Lukas got Exchange Rate to win the 7 furlong Tom Fool Handicap. Maybe it was the Nijinsky blood that got him to go that far for Lukas. LMAO!!!!
And...how far did Joshua Dancer's pedigree (Danzig - Miss Alleged) get him in the Lukas barn? He broke down in a 5 1/2 furlong baby race.
It seems that given a Danzig, Larry Jones can get one to go a lot farther than could Dwayne. It does make you wonder how many more TC races would have been won if someone else had Lukas's stock over the years. That being said, back to your above post:
Why was Cowtown Cat any more of a longshot than Scat Daddy? Both won their preps. Sam P and Any Given Saturday were in the "2nd tier" of the five.
And Thunder Gulch was a $700,000 private purchase (in 1994) after his Remsen victory...it's not like he was a "no name" after that, running 2nd in the Hollywood Futurity and winning the Fountain of Youth before the Florida Derby. Red-headed stepchild?
I have my questions about Charismatic. I first wonder if he really shouldn't have been a claimer in the winter of his three year old season, and I wonder if he would have broken down if he wasn't trained so hard starting after the Santa Anita Derby (recall when Lukas said, "The horse THRIVES on hard training?"). A better question: how many former $62,500 claimers stood at Lanes End for $40,000?

I’m sorry to see Hard Spun in the Preakness. I wish his connections would skip it, give him lots of long gallops and point him toward the Belmont which I think suits him. He has both proven tactical speed and a stamina laden pedigree, especially through his dam which won a 12 furlong stakes on grass at Pimlico and counts Belmont winners Chateaugay and Little Current as close-up relatives. Maybe his owners feel a Preakness win coupled with a Derby second yields a more viable/valuable stud prospect than a Belmont win does?
I’d also like to see him fresh and in the Belmont in the hope that he (or Circular Quay) would stop what appears to be a not particularly fast horse from a mediocre crop from winning the Triple Crown.

Poor Pitiful Pete
and Encyclopedia Britannica Roke,
When they head down the stretch of the P SS will barely see Curlin who will be so far ahead even Personal Ensign wouldn't be able to catch him. Go read Steve Haskin's article in the DRF yesterday about Curlin. Curlin wins.....Curlin wins!!!!

Larry,
Actually, Pete taught me everything I know. (OK, I'm an idiot LOL!)
If, two weeks ago, I said that in the Derby, Curlin would beat Imawildandcrazyguy and Sedgefield by less than a length, what would you have said? "Gee, he's got to be better than that!" Well....was he?
Bet on Chelokee....do the Hokey Pokey...sing some karioke...
Why are those flowers called Black Eyed Susans, anyway? Once, a girl name Susan gave me a black eye! It's rough out there....no respect, I tell ya - I don't get no respect!
Louis....Scat Daddy did have a setback - it's called Hoofis Explodis. It's caused when a horse that trains wearing bar shoes wears plates in a race. It leaves the walls of the hooves looking like a china plate that's been dropped on the floor.

Hey LarryGene,
LarryGene, LarryGene the Curlin spinning machine!
Do I sound like I need Steve Haskin to help me decide on da winna! Is he gonna guarantee your bets cuz if not you'll have a bone to pick with him next week.
Just tryin' to keep it real! The Schnozz is the deal.
Don't slip on any banana peels or discarded Curlin win tickets!
Regards,
Pariah Pete

Pete Moss,
Haskin & Robbins did pick Street Sense. My pick went off at 20 to 1 and finished at a quarter after seven.
Street Sense has NO chance. That's right...NO chance. What happens EVERY time everyone jumps on a horse's bandwagon?
"Fu Peg is a cinch in the Preakness"
"Charismatic can't lose the Belmont...he's the next TC winner."
There are more...any ring a bell?
I have yet to see Street Sense and "Borail" win with an outside sweep. In the Bluegrass, he made an outside move and hung on the money. He ain't gettin' the rail next week, bucko!

Larry....now I'm lumped together with Pete? No wonder why when I went for a vasecotmy, the doctor asked, "With a face like yours, why do you need one?"
As they say in Bensonhurst, "Fuhgedaboudit!" Curlin is too lightly raced to keep up the song and dance with the big boys...where's his foundation that makes you think he can improve right now? I think if they keep pushing this horse, he's gonna break in half.
Mista Matz has been pointing for this race...what results does that bring? Barbaro's Derby, Round Pond's BC Distaff.....bet on Chelokee - and that's no jokee. Okey dokey?
