It's very difficult for an average woman jockey to get a good start in this business compared to the average man. I know oodles of male owners and trainers who state unequivocally that they would never use a girl jock, and I know very, very few who are willing to use one even once. Sometimes it's because they think they don't have the talent, and sometimes it's because the older men are of a different generation and refuse to risk a girl's life.

But with those kinds of numbers against her, it's hard for a woman jockey to get the decent mounts she needs to build a reputation. If you get mounts no one can win with, and therefore you never win and don't even make a good showing, you develop a reputation --however unfair-- of being a lousy jock. A new jock only has a few weeks to show that he/she can get a little more out of a mount than one might expect. After that, they are either on the way up or on the way out.

This may have been true 30 years ago, and might still be true at a few tracks with strong jockey colonies but at most tracks there are desparate owners with decent horses in small barns who will give any jockey a chance if they will put an honest effort into riding the horse. Perhaps this is why you see women leading the jockey standings at some of the smaller tracks. A willingness to give honest efforts on any horse they are offered is how all jockeys establish themselves. So if a young women rider isn't getting opportunities it is because she isn't putting the effort into getting on horses in the smaller barns to prove herself.

One with talent, of course, but also one that had sex appeal, I don't mean the broodmare either. Look at what Danica Patrick has done for her sport and although she wasn't a top tennis player, Anna Kornikova did alot to draw attention to the sport.

The male riders can't do this because 1, their men and 2, atleast in NA, the male athletes that garner national attention are 6'2 200lbs. (Although my wife tells me Gary Stevens was hot and her new fav is Alan Garcia)

It's only the people in the industry who are impressed by their athletiscim, it doesn't transcend. I think a female rider could. Julie certainly did for a time. I personally was a fan of Rosemary Hoemeister on and off a horse but Chantal Sutherland is the one who could be our Danica Patrick. Now that she is Cali especially. I apollogize if I offended anyone jsut please don't compare to Louis.

chantal is definatly a looker. she ruined (In my opinion) her career, or at least put a ceiling on it, when she got her grade 1 national TV debut on bishop court hill, a rabbit for another horse, whoose name I can't forget. bishop court hill is a front running sprinter. he was a rabbit. everyone in the race knew he was a rabbit. well, exepct chantal, who decided to hold the horse back and try to win the race for bishop court hill. her stablemate, who was the favoriate did not have any pace to run at and I think it was barrego who ended up winning that race.

chantal didn't lose opprotunities becuase she is a woman. she lost her opprotunity becuse she didn't follow inctructions in a million dollar grade 1 and cost her owners money.

Maylan Studart has taken her place as the hottest female jockey anyway.

. . . 2 species? Men and women aren't even the same species anymore? That might explain the whole toilet seat up/down controversy, but . . .

Hayley Turner

Turner becomes first British female centurion By Racing Post Staff6.54PM 30 DEC 2008
HAYLEY TURNER created racing history at Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening when Mullitovermaurice provided the jockey with her 100th winner of the calendar year. Turner is the first ever female jockey in Britain to notch the century.

Turner, who was out of luck in the first race on Kilkenny Bay, was up with the pace throughout on the 7-1 chance and kicked for home off the final bend. There was some interference between Turner's mount and Shane Kelly aboard Special Bond, and althoughthe stewards did not call an enquiry, they did hand Turner a two day ban for careless riding, (January 13-14).

The ban will be of little concern to Turner, who came back to the winners enclosure to a rousing welcome from the crowd, and the jockey said of the milestone:

"All credit to my agent [Guy Jewell] for getting me there, I honestly didn't think I'd get there but Guy insisted I could and kept me going.

"I've had over 1,000 rides this year, so I'm ready for a break! I'm riding at Lingfield tomorrow but I'll be taking the first half of January off and then go from there."

Michael Bell who has provided Turner with some of her more memorable rides this season, including Furnace and The Betchworth Kid, acknowledged her success when speaking to At The Races, he said:

"It's a fantastic achievement. From day one she was thoroughly dedicated and very determined, she had tunnel vision on being a success. She's given her all and her success is richly deserved."

Earlier in the afternoon Turner gained winner number 99 aboard the David Elsworth-trained Newlyn Art at Lingfield, and the trainer was quick to praiseher.

He said: "She is a very honest girl who gets on with the job and makes very few mistakes."

In the wake of her achievement, Hayley Tuner has been quoted at 100-1 to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year for 2009.

Sammy Davis

Actually, my wife received a special "Living Saint" award at my agency's annual kick off meeting a couple of years ago.

And, she is.

I believe male humans are more genetically similar to male chimps than human females.

As for the toilet seat thing, my mom fused at me if she found it down as if it were down it was probably wet.

I like Julie Krone's personality better than CS, Julie is very friendly, & would make a great commentator. Julie is special to me, i lover her style.

Happy New Year to all.. I know it's not midnight yet but I'm going to bed.

My 3 YO gelding, Civil Disorder, is running tomorrow in the second race at Charles Town and his jockey is a female who rode a very good race his first time out on 12/07/. 4 1/2 is not his best distance but we missed getting him the 7 furlong MSW yesterday and he needs a race.

I think the only reason females have not completely taken over the sport, which they will do in coming decades is that they are fewer in number. I greatly admire the athleticism of Emma Jayne, the intelligent way Chantal has handled her career, and am in awe of how Julie and Francine overcame such chauvinism to even want to play the game. I feel sorry that Cory Clark began her career before she was polished enough to take advantage of her bug years the way others have.

The strength argument is invalid. I retired from riding over a decade ago and have yet to meet a 20 year old male or female who can lift a feed bag or gallop a tough horse without breaking a sweat as I still can (okay, maybe with a little whining ;) ) as I have decades of hard, hard, hard physical training and skill behind me. As a natural light weight, I had no trouble hanging guys who hadn't eaten in 5 years on a coat hook in the room who needed it ;) .

With improved training and mentoring that girls can receive today that were not available to me (as the only female in the room usually), I can't see how the jock's rooms of the future won't be filled with mostly females who have fewer weight problems and in my experience are there because they want to be, not just because they are small. I have ridden with so many guys who hate horses, hate riding, hate owners, hate trainers, hate stewards, and hate everything about the game which they know embarrassing little about, but can't figure out how to get out of it without walking hots since they hit the track at 17... They can't fathom how someone with an education is there by choice. All the women I know riding now do it because they want to. Not because they can't figure out how to stop. There is no limit to how well they can do, and with their success, will come more and more females. I was only discouraged starting out, but I would only encourage someone today who wanted to do it. Even so, as many people rode me because I was female as refused to ride me because I was. I never let it discourage me. I felt I was fairly enough judged, and that the doors are wide open now as far as most trainers are concerned.

Fair Play

It is indeed a sad day when you can not find a 20 YO, male or mfemale, thjat can not lift a 50# bag of feed with out breaking a sweat.
