The fact that Bluegrass Cat at 5/2 speaks volumes of the other horses in the race.

Until Bluegrass Cat beat some credible horses. He remains a fraud. Fast works dont mean much in the morning.

Here are some of the horses in the Bluegrass Stakes:

Among the others are Little Cliff, who broke his maiden at Keeneland last fall, but is winless in three starts this year. Court Folly, trained by long-time Carl Nafzger assistant Ian Wilkes, also won his first race at Keeneland last year and will be making just his second start around two turns. He was most recently third to Sharp Humor in the Swale (GII) March 4. Storm Treasure comes from the same connections, Mike McCarty and Steve Asmussen, as that of Private Vow, who will start in the Arkansas Derby (GII) Saturday. Sinister Minister, trained by Bob Baffert, ships in from California after running second to Cause to Believe in the California Derby. Seaside Retreat ran a huge race to be second in the Lane's End and is the only stakes winner in the field except for Bluegrass Cat and First Samurai. The recent Turfway maiden winner Sadler's Trick rounds out the field.

HR LLC,

When I saw the field I had the same thought. If FuSam or BC don't top this field, it would be a massive miracle, funky Keenland surface or no. Of course, Strong Contender is the wild card, but just looking at the field I'd say the trifecta should be a done deal and it won't pay enough to buy a happy meal after the races

I'm certain enough that the number reflects the horse "ran his race" in the Illinois Derby. That's further evidenced in Ill-Bred's post above -"Afterward, the jock said he ran his race and just wasn't good enough."

Whirlaway-

Basically, I was not impressed by who he was beating in Northern Cal and I am not impressed by his speed figures. The jockey's comment that he ran his race at Hawthorne was further proof for me.

Of course, if CTB just didn't take to Hawthorne, then perhaps he will show us more in Louisville. One of the best ways to get a price on a horse is to be willing to overlook a single bad race.

I still think he's a cut below.

I think I posted the fact the Bluegrass Cat is a fraud after his race in the Tampa Derby.

No need to beat a dead horse anymore.

No doubt HR,

NO use beating a dead horse. You know this is horseracing so keep in mind there is always the Derby ...

Yeah, I'm on the Cause To Believe bandwagon, too.

I think Maria's Mon does have it in him to sire multiple Derby horses, and I think the Majestic Prince line is underrated and under-appreciated.

So, I endorse the motion.

TCB, CTB!

Well, Sinister Minister just made Cause to Believe look more credible in my eyes. Bouncing on the rail aside. Cause to Believe actually did beat a decent horse in his career- and he didn't even have to run today to show it
Both horses share one thing in common: they run damn fast (Cause to believe, 1 1/16 in 1:41 and something, Sinister Minister at 1 1/8 in 1:48.85. Those California horses! )

Keeneland played more like Del Mar today. Nothing against Sinister Minister but I doubt he will "War Emblem" this years KY Derby.

Agreed, the front end pace is going to be stiff this year and there is going to a cavalry charge going into the first turn. Of course some of the speed dropped out with First Samurai and possibly (if Pletcher isn't a total tool which is unlikely as Keyed Entry is going on despite looking like he would rathar not) Bluegrass Cat who looked awful today.

Ditto that. I wouldn't even bother entering him. But then, I wouldn't have bothered entering half the horses that have faced the starter over the last 15 years. Way too many vanity entries. Look at how many Perez used to feed to the wolves.

Hi Folks,

Sinister Minister was dominant lone speed in the Bluegrass with a running style like his sire, Old Trieste, at a similar time of the year. There was a strong cross wind that might have slowed the closers some but this colt outclassed this field.

He's the purest top end speed of this years 3yos, catch me if you can and see if I can last. He's a colt that causes his own problems, breaking in air and an awkward lead change in The Bluegrass and though it didn't cost him it's a continuation of problems.

In the Cal Derby he lost the race by hitting the rail several times and that made Cause To Believe look better than he was. Prevous to that he was rank in the backstretch against Too Much Bling.

Sinister Minister, despite problems is an improving horse. If he's not tested in the Derby he can contend. With all the apparent speed it's possible that no one will commit to the lead except this guy who'll have it no other way.

Regards,

Pete

I've already gone on record with Laywer Ron as my Derby pick. It's really hard to get past picking any horse but the top five (Laywer Ron, Brother Derek, Barbaro, Bob and John, Discreet Cat) but if I was pressed to choose an outsider I would hang my hat on either Steppenwolfer or Jazil.

Steppenwolfer is a real grinder-seems to show up every race and Jazil acted like a colt who figure it out the last 220 yards of the Wood. He's a bubble horse as far as earnings for the Derby but that might be a moot point if less than twenty enter.
