Devon Loch was owned by the Queen Mother. For years afterwards they showed that clip before every Grand National.

Devon Loch didn't toss him, just pancaked a couple hundred yards from the wire.

And the Queen doesn't shake hands with anyone without her gloves... she'll even stop eating to put her gloves back on to shake someone's hand.

Anyone hoping she shows up in a bright red hat with a purple ribbon? 8)

Actually, Devon Loch was owned by the Queen Mother, not the Queen.

I believe I did say, as you have quoted, worksoplad, that Devon Loch was owned by the Queen Mother. Since I got the Dick Francis bit wrong I just have to point out the bit I got right.

Methinks Her Majesty will go with either a red or dark pink hat with purple accents.

I don't know much about the Royal Stables, but I do know that Prince Phillip is an avid supporter and breeder of Cleveland Bays. Anyone willing to keep that breed alive is OK in my book. I've only met maybe 3-4 CBs in my life, but they were all like big dogs. Very relaxed and polite.

I think the Dick Francis horse just sat down like a dog close to the wire. Is that what pancaked means, Sam?

Well from what I remember (and my memory is clearly faulty), the horse kind of jumped a bit and then the front legs splayed. I remember there was much discussion as to exactly what happened to make the horse do that.

Oh my, thanks for posting that, Lucy.

Also the Queen did wear a red hat, soupbowl with a brim style, red bow around the crown, and the soupbowl brim truly a puke lime green. This is one day I wish I was color blind.

Hi Tucumcari,

Sorry that you're less enthused than from Derby's past but it's a good field and it seems that most of the leaders went through their preps intact.

There are always stories but I guarantee that a win by Curlin (I've picked Street Sense) will generate some very powerful responses and cries of greatness (whether premature or not).

Someone mentioned (sorry I don't recall who) that's it's a well balanced Derby and that should make for good drama.

Good luck to all but especially to horses and riders, "safe home".

Regards,

Pete

I didn't see many in the crowd of 130,000 who looked disinterested. A great day for our sport!

It's hard for a man to be disinterested in anything when he's surrounded by beer and breasts.
