Below is a link to a quote by Gary Contessa regarding Dutrow. What he states pretty much says it all. See link below:

I read a good one somewhere today, can't remember where... but what if the HORSES was suspended for 4-12 months. (like bute = 4mo, cocain = 12mo)

I think that would wake owners up and get them to reading those vet bills. Especially owners who don't own a lay-up farm. Imagine a promising 2yo or 3yo thrown out to pasture for what should be their most lucrative earnings period. AND since their ruled off, their value would basically plumet. Dutrow type trainers w/many violations might look a wee bit less desirable then.

I like this idea. Instead of horses just being transferred to asst trainers while the trainer is suspended, the horse couldn't even be on the track or whatever.

Imagine if Curlin tested positive for something and was suspended for 6 months, that would take him out of racing for this year and might get the attention of others who have trainers that test positive. The only bad thing I can see is that some people would retire the horse (such as if Big Brown was suspended for 6 months, he's going to be retired after the BC anyway) and then they would in essence get out of the suspension and make money with stud fees.
