That race was a workout for Songster. Beautiful black horse I say. He whooped up on that field...he was too much the best!

Just saw this thread - I have to say that I saw Valentine in the flesh the other night after she ran. She is gorgeous - not very tall, but a nice broad chest and rear end, with a long, thin diamond shape star on her face. They ship her in and out from the farm or I would go take pics....

Got one in my herd, nice big stout filly, registered as black with Jockey Club (and "they" told me it couldn't be done) :D

Now that she's in training and not getting doused with fly goop continually all summer, she stays a lot more inky-black, too! There's something in that stuff that bleaches coats.....

Would two dark bay/brown horses be more aot to produce a black?

I don't know, Griff. There is a color expert at Thoroughbredchampions.com you might try. Just post it in the breeding sections. Mumtaz is her posting name. :D

In answer to your question Griff, there are two seperate genes and two pairs of chromosomes.

First the base coat:

A dark bay would be black based and either black/black or black/red (EE, or Ee)

Then the bay color comes from another pair of chromosomes and so a bay horse needs to have at least one bay gene to be bay bay/bay or bay/not bay
(Agouti AA, Aa)

A black horse does not have the the bay (A) version of the gene. So a black horse would be black/black or black/red in the base coat, and not black/not black in the other gene.

To further complicate matters at the bay gene location there are at least four versions of the gene. Bay, Black, Seal Brown, and Wild Bay.

So to get a black from two bay parents both have to be black based and carry the not bay version of the Agouti gene.

You are never going to get a black from two chestnuts. So in that respect you are more likely to get blacks from bays.

Hope this helps
