I'm pretty sure Exbourne broke down racing. Nureyev? He also shattered his right hind leg, in his case in a paddock accident, and was saved to continue his stud career.
Seems like if I'm remembering right, Spanish Riddle was actually fitted with an artificial limb.

A friend of mine had her jumper fracture his leg above the knee 2 weeks ago - a horrific break by all accounts and it happened out in the paddock ...
They stableized him as best they could at home and bandaged him up to his elbows and made the 90-120 minute drive to the University of Guelph and then opted to try surgery on him

PIctures of him in his sling can be seen on Page 6 and others following that ...
He will be in the sling for 6+ weeks then on stall rest for another 6-9 months and then I guess everyone holds their breaths that he can be turned out and not re-injure himself and simply do stud duties instead ...
The had a set back 2 days ago - one jugular vein clotted shut and a screw from one of the plates is now poking through his leg, but they are still cautiously optomistic that he is going to pull through okay ...
Hopefully Barbaro will be the same ...

Boitron, a California sire, was also fitted with a "peg" leg. He lived a pretty long life and had decent success as a sire, I believe.

I completely disagree with saying the lack of layoff broke this horse down. 2 weeks is a completely adequate amount of time for a horse to recover especially given the lack of racing miles this horse had on him. His schedule was set that way to prepare him to come back in two weeks after the Derby.
Plenty of people thought this horse was not right after the Derby. This horse was not "right" in the paddock, not "right" on the track and that didn't just pop up right then. They galloped him this morning for cripes sakes.
Actually, all of that matters very little because the horse took a bad step and sustained an injury because of that bad step. It had nothing to do with coming back in two weeks, possible unsoundness, false breaking...none of it mattered it was a freak accident that could have happened now or four months from now or three months ago. Its tragic and sad, but it happens.
Anyways we'll probably know more in a couple of hours.
Sam,
Are you thinking of Nureyev?

I am still in shock over what happened today. It was surreal. I woke up happy and tonight I will be praying for this gallant horse. I, like many, were hoping for him to be the one to end the 28 year drought in the Triple Crown. Yet again the racing gods dashed our hopes...
To see him trying to run on three legs broke my heart...
My heart goes out to his connections, they are in my prayers tonight.

Just trying to tie all of this together, Barbaro was doing half bucks in the post parade and Edgar looked down toward his back hind right leg at times. Maybe he was getting an occassional pain in the right hind ankle, which caused him to do the half bucks and also break through the gate to get away from the pain. I wonderered what Edgar felt or what he was looking at. The commentators made mention that Edgar warmed Barbaro up more than the other horses in the post parade. Was he concerned about something. I have been fortunate enough to have Edgar ride for me before. I have a great deal of respect for him.

According to Dr. Larry Bramlage, a prominent equine surgeon with the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Barbaro suffered a condylar fracture of the right hind leg. Below the ankle is a comminuted fracture (meaning it is in pieces) of the first phalax and there is a piece off the sesamoid.
I've heard the pastern's in a bad way too. The person then said that blood supply isn't good but of course they aren't in any way a vet and it was 4th hand info by the time it got to them (and they seemed to be the one making veterinary judgments on blood supply) so I'm hoping it's like sitting in a circle, telling some a secret, and watching it change 50 times before it gets to you.

Sad, very sad....
Generating some mighty big prayers for Barbaro - horses *can* be amazing animals sometimes. He's been taken to an excellent facility (New Bolten). I'm going to think positive thoughts that possibly they can get that ankle pieced back together again - and even if he could never bear the weight for stud service he's earned his right to retirement.
