i'm starting to get the jist that at least on the claiming levels, owners and trianers dont' have the same goals in mind.

Goals might be slightly different, but not entirely. Win and loose the horse when you've gotten the most you can out of it. Drop of of a win when you know the horse is limited and won't have to run it's guts out. Manage them such that they are as safe as you can keep them and still have a return on investment.

If it were up to me, I would do it the German way - no drugs, period. If a horse is unsound, he won't race, it's as simple as that. Only horses that retired sound would be able to stand as sires. Somehow we need to go back to the breed-to-race mentality, and stop this breed-to-breed mentality. We've seen many million dollar sales horses who can't run worth a lick.

I've been a horse racing fan since the 60s (Native Diver got me started), and I don't recall the number of catastrophic breakdowns and early retirements in those days that I see now. It's time to return to the 'good old days,' and make the US competitive worldwide again.
