Seattle Slew vs Secretariat

Postby jagger » Wed May 21, 2008 12:02 pm

Seattle Slew better than Secretariat  :? :o I am a big Seattle Slew fan but....Secretariat's Kentucky Derby was just short of 3 seconds fast than Seattle Slew or not quite 15 lengths. Secretariat's Belmont time was >5 seconds faster than Seattle Slew or >25 lengths. We all know about the timing debacle at the Preakness but I think it is safe to say that Big Red was probably faster than Louis Quartoze or Tank's Prospect and therefor, Seattle Slew.

I feel badly about Big Brown as I think he is truly a great horse and possibly better than some of the other Triple Crown winners..including Seattle Slew...both his KD and Preakness times were better than Seattle Slew and even if he doesn't win the Belmont, I think his time will still be better than Seattle Slew. If he wins the Belmont and retires, he will never accomplish the many things that the other TC winners have that have been mentioned on this thread and others. Not even close. He will never have PROVEN himself in the eyes of many. If the Belmont is his last race, he will need to run very close to 2:26 or better for many to recognize him as a great horse. I think he just might.

I understand the business side of the equation perfectly well. Having said that comparing BB to the great racehorses of yesteryear, if he retires after winning or losing the Belmont, would be like comparing the Heisman trophy winner with the best football players of all time. To be considered one of the best you have to run against the best and that means racing in open company not restricted company. The TC races may be G1's but they're still age restricted, the best horses aren't allowed to enter. BB is not and never will be a 'great' racehorse if he doesn't race against the best. Three Chimneys could lose their shirt on BB if he doesn't win the Belmont or the Smarty Jones' don't start lighting the world on fire by next spring.

My bad  Big Brown was .4seconds slower than Seattle Slew in the Preakness. But, he did canter in.

hey it wasn't me! it really is another member of this forum

with that said, I give Slew the beneift of the doubt becuase of what he did his 4YO year. he beat some damn good horses and did it in style.

hwoever I see your point. if I had to bet Slew as a 3YO going into the belmont and big brown as a 3YO going into the belmont, i'd probably go with Big Brown too

I do however, not put big red in that best of all time catogory becuase he never did run against older horses. you can't be the best if you dont' run against the best. I give dr fager and seattle slew alot more respect in that regard.

I believe the Woodward, Whitney, Malboro Cup, Canadian International and the Man O' War were all against older horses.

You never know... if Casino Drive makes BB put the pedal to the metal, we just might see that 2:26...

Of all people on this forum to call out a failed selection you take the cake, should I mention that "Etched is the best 3 year old in the world" or how about taking the odds on Tale of Ekati in the Derby because no Grade 1 winner should go off at those odds, and now your latest, Casino Drive is the 2nd best horse in the world.

Well, I for one am tired of your self-prolcaimed prowess as a handicapper so I offer you this wager. If Casino Drive beats Big Brown to the finish line in the Belmont I will leave the forum forever, if, however, Big Brown beats Casino Drive to the finish line in the Belmont you will be gone forever. Is your opinion strong enough to back up your mouth?

Bdw0617, what about giving a response to that challenge? or are you so much of a chicken?

bdw is right in ignoring DDT's dare. And you, DDT, would be better served if you just ignored about 80% of bdw's blather. His typing can get well ahead of his brain, but he says he's young, and you know how smart you are when you're young. Let it go.

1. I never "brag about my handicapping prawless". I am a handicapper. that is not bragging. Never do I down anyone elses picks, but if you bite I bite back

2. I have said in this very thread at least 2 times I can remember without going back to look, THAT NOT ONLY DO I WANT BIG BROWN TO WIN, I NEVER CAME OUT AND SAID CASINO DRIVE WAS A BETTER HORSE! where do you get o ff chanangeling me to something I never even said?

I have said, and actually go back and READ the post, that all i am saying is 1) casino drive is the first horse that is going to make big brown have to work and 2) let's not count our chickens before they hatch.

Contrary to what you or DDT think, I have nothing to prove to you guys I frankly don't give a damn what you think to be honest. sorry, I just don't. I don't get up in the morning and say "damn what am I going to do to make DDT like me". i came to the realization that when you are down, people talk about you, when you are up, people talk about you, it's just different people. I don't get caught up in what people think about me because there is always going to be someone who has it out for me for one reason or another.

keep talking about me and and ranting about me, all you are doing is renting me space in your head

I would like to start out by saying I do give a damn what you think, and, what everyone else thinks, but opinions are simply that and you are entiled to your opinion. I shoulld not have challenged you with the wager and I recant it.

As to you not bragging or calling people out, I have a different opinion about that, but then that is just my opinion.

From now on I will just stick to the facts and if I have an opinion on any subject it will be supported by facts.

Again, you certainly do not have to wake up every morning thinking about how to get me, or anyone, to like you, that has nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing with your stated opinions.

exact opposite here. I want him to win, but i can't possibly put a bet on a 2/5 horse and that's if we are lucky
