Claiming rules in Iowa

Postby Dave C » Mon Jul 17, 2006 1:04 pm

What are the claiming rules in Iowa? I ask because on July 14 Ebony Lady ran in a claiming race at Northlands Park in Alberta, Canada after being claimed in her previous outing (about June 27 I think) at Prairie Meadows. Most places I know of don't allow claimed horses to race elsewhere for a couple months after being claimed unless it's the end of the meet. Does Iowa not have any rules about this or did they grant an exemption or what? Ebony Lady won the race and was claimed again for $30 000.

Hi Dave. Prairie Meadows has two meets, the thorougbred only meet ended on July 4th and they are now in their second meet which is a mixed thoroughbred and quarterhorse. In Iowa the claimed horse must only stay at the track through the end of the meet, which was July 4th. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the explanation. I just looked at the entries page on Equibase and saw there were current entries for Prairie Meadows and assumed it was the same meet.

Damn crazy Iowans ;)

But yes, it's considered to be two completely different meets.

They are damn crazy.... I live in Omaha so I have a choice between Fonner Park (how many of you have even heard of Fonner? .... or Prairie Meadows... their really isn't a lot of thought that goes into that. Hopefully someday I will have my own horses racing and then it will be even better. :)

Probably alot more people in the racing world have heard of Fonner Park than have heard of Northlands Park.
