Lawyer Ron (update: going to Pletcher)

Postby Heidilady » Tue Sep 26, 2006 11:29 pm

Ok I don't know if it was just Randy Moss's opinion or the horse's connections but I don't think Lawyer Ron ran himself out of the BCC picture having seen Wire to Wire and the Super Derby footage now. I think it's not entirely the horse's aggression but also McKee's handling of him. Even the show predicted a jockey change. I think it's sad a horse with his ability who could run a top race doesn't get another chance. It might be the deep end considering who else is going to the Classic but it's not like Strong Contender had him by that much and a more settled Lawyer Ron would've won. Now I don't remember the stud agreement reached on him but is it end of the racing career or end of this year? If it's end of this year I'd roll the dice. If he's going out next year maybe then skip the Classic this time.

There's a stud agreement on Lawyer Ron ?? Isn't he the one whose dam failed to bring even an upset bid ($1,000) at Keeneland as a broodmare prospect?

Hi Guys,

I believe Lawyer Ron is slated to stand at Stonewall Farm when his career is over. That is at least what I was led to believe when I visited there this summer.

Oh yeah they set that up pre-Derby if I remember right. I think it was because what with his owner's death the actual lawyer for which Lawyer Ron is named talked the family into trying to do the best they could by the estate instead of just holding onto him for sentimental reasons. Of course it was before he kinda fell apart until the fall.

I was just unsure as to whether he's gotta go to stud in 2007 or if they'll let them run as long as they wanna run. News out though that his connections haven't ruled out the Breeders' Cup (take that Randy) but it's just unknown what'll happen next--it's being considered though so that's good.

Well look what we have here. He's going to Pletcher. Holthus is out. And ouch Pletcher's in the next barn over. There was about a 10 minute warning on the 'he's leaving.'

Here's what Pletcher has to say:

'Pletcher was asked whether Lawyer Ron will be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Classic, for which the trainer currently has no prospects. "Everything is a possibility," he said. "Until we get him in and look at him, it would be a little premature to speculate where he might run next. He's obviously a very nice horse. I just hope I do as well as Mr. Holthus has because he's done a great job with him."'--DRF

He'll run in the Classic and will show marked improvement for Dr. Pletcher.

I liked LAWYER RON before the derby. I like him now. I like Bob Holthus too, but I'd place a bet (same race, of course) on Todd's horses before I'd ever place a bet on Bob's. I don't know what LR's future holds, but I'd like to see him win a few more before he retires. It was a good thing that along with LR, I bet BARBARO to win. I lost a few on LR, but I sure made up the difference on BARBARO.

Laywer Ron was my Derby pick but in hindsight, Secretariat would have been hard pressed to put away Barbaro on Derby day.

Only time will tell if Pletcher gets more out of L/R than Holthus.
