The Cold War story... 10 wins this year and going strong.

5 year old gelding Cold War an Ontario bred son of War Deputy has changed hands several times in his career due to several factors, moderate ability being the prime suspect. This time last year he was owned by a charming older lady named Jean Hawkins who was a hands-on horsewoman although the trainer of note here at Fort Erie was Vern Fernandes, a low key guy that usually has no more than 3 horses in his care at one time. I knew Jean quite well and was saddened to here that she had passed away the day after the end of the meet. The horse was given to Vern shortly after and he readied him for a spring campaign this May when he raced for as little as $4000 claiming tag where he showed good courage to eventually win when sent a mile or farther. Cold War"s heart grew over this summer and he strung together a few wins here and at Woodbine. Well today he became North America"s leading winner for 2006 with an impressive gallop around Woodbine in an $80,000/ optional claimer on the new polytrack surface and bringing this years earnings to around $185000. I cannot help but think that in each race he gets a second wind at about the quarter pole and a friendly nudge from a strong spirit that is always around him.

What a great story and the reason why this game's the only game.

I love it Wilf - thanks for sharing.

In addition to his spirit-linked second wind, his renewed winning ways on polytrack surface may provide longer and better careers for a number of our durable campaigners.
