Cool, a Wilko update

Postby Heidilady » Wed Oct 11, 2006 11:18 am

J. Paul Reddam did a very nice Talkin' Horses chat on Bloodhorse.com and I for some reason had figured Wilko was retired but apparently they have plans for the old boy. I officially adore J. Paul Reddam now. I love how he went from being a Philosophy prof to a bagillionaire horse enthusiast.

What was your feeling after Wilko won the 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile over eventual 3-year-old champion Afleet Alex? How do you feel about your chances this year in the Breeders' Cup races and in the Juvenile with Great Hunter?

Reddam
Of course, I was very excited when Wilko won, but I was also in shock. It had been a very bad day up to that point, and it looked like Wilko was going to pack it in as they went around the turn. I started to slump in my chair and then I was suddenly yelling my head off as he flew home. I was very pleased with Great Hunter’s race at Keeneland in the Lane’s End, and I think this should set him up well for the Juvenile. However, it will be a full field so how he does will really depend on the trip he gets as he figures to be in mid-pack somewhere.

I've enjoyed following Wilko since his Juvenile season. The little guy always leaves it all on the track. How is he doing? Will he be back?

Reddam
Wilko had a bad case of colic shortly after his last race and needed an operation. He is fine now after a good rest, and he should be back in training in the next two weeks. If everything goes well, he will run at the beginning of next year.
