Guilty!

Postby George William Smith » Fri Dec 08, 2006 12:05 am

1. Guilty of peeking in on the 'slinking off' thread this once, because I promised myself that I would not post again at least until 2007.
2. Guilty of posting when I made a pledge to myself to give myself a suspension of 3 months for touting and spamming.
3. Guilty of flagrantly touting the success of the GSV2. No matter that I saw it as a potential gravey train since it really is very good at measuring genetic strength, far exceeding my expectations.

And now before I again slink off to serve out my suspension, even though I've quit every list because I can't handle the drivel [now there's a word I haven't used in ages] except this one [because it still gives out GSV numbers to those who subscribe], I have a couple of comments to make.

First, since I was the first commercial pedigree analyst, I wonder how many of you reading this know how many pedigree analysts make their majority of their money from pedigree analysis. Not bloodstock consulting, commissions and the like from selling or helping clients buy horses but from pedigree analysis IN THE WORLD ARE THERE?

A handful? The world is not willing to pay pedigree analysts what they are worth. They were better at paying, believe it or not in 1976 than 2006, even though we are much, much better than we were then!

It usually takes me about three days to do a broodmare analysis for which I get $400.00. That's why I drive a 77 chev and 68 ford truck.

I used to advertise my business until about 15 years ago, but for every $1000 for a page, I got back $1500. Yep, made a few bucks, but the magazine made more. If I advertised more, then I would not make even the ad money back. So if one is good, he does not need to promote themselves may be true in many business, but NOT the thorougbhred area of pedigree analysis.

But that is my preference. I used to turn out 3 or 4 broodmare analyses in a day from a computerized program I built. Now I do it to keep my skills sharp and help out others and it pays the bills.

I could charge more, but no one would pay.

On the other hand, if the GSV2 is a good betting tool even though I invented it as a breeding tool, then people will pay. That's why I flagrantly jumped on the bandwagon and started touting my program.

I posted the good results and the bad. As far as I am aware, I am the only one who has a web page showing my major disasters for all the world to see if they are so inclined.

Darn tooting, I posted to this site if I had good results, especially since this site sells those numbers to those of you who subscribe. The more of you that subscribe the more of you that find it a valuable addition. The opposite would be true if it were just a bunch of mumbo jumbo numbers.

I'm trying to make a better life for myself and doing it in an honorable way. The thoroughbred business is a tough, tough game and many make their way by putting their hands in the pockets of others and smooth talking them into giving up huge sums of money to them. They end up with the farm and the guy with the farm ends up getting out of the business.

The GSV2 is the best tool I've seen. The second best that I've seen is Bill's Conduit mares. Mike V's goldmine program is looking good also.

I've taken up way too much of your time and mine. So now I begin my suspension all over again. But at least I feel better so there! LOL Don't worry, I won't peek again because I want to come back in a few months and if I peek, I'll have to start all over again and then start all over again....then start all over again.....

Personally, this is a place to discuss pedigree... and I don't give a rat's ass if your touting GSV, PP's or OCD's, as long as it's about pedigree. I can spot ranting and salesmanship from a mile away, I personally have learned much and enjoy all your posts even if I don't agree with some of them. This idea of self-imposed banishment is silly. You're a grown up, I am sure that you have learned that you can't please all the people all the time.

There are hundreds of systems, hunders of attempts to find the holy grail, I applaud each and every one. I too applaud the naysayers that ridicule and strip down the ideas, because thats what birth by fire does, it quite simply weeds out the bullsh*t. And we need it. The alternative is people throwing out ideas without any foundation, and being accepted as the "right" way to look at things. Reminds me of a story:

During the highest threat from U-Boats in WW2, an "idea guy" come up with a solution: "Raise the temperature of the oceans till we literally cook all the U boats!" Another guy says: "WHAT? How in hell to you propose to do that"? He replies: "I give the ideas, I don't implement them".

Forget your ban, post. Do your thing. Be glorified, be ridiculed, be ignored. It's all good, IMHO.

George, I'm happy to see all sorts of "drivel" on the forum. As long as the thread title is informative, I can read it or stay away from it as I choose. What I hate is titles that give no idea why I should look at it or avoid it; I usually ignore it for several days until I get time to check further. It's just like getting an envelope with no return address or markings.

Your thread titles only need to say what they are about, not how great your system is--that's just inappropriate, IMHO. And I tend to avoid the obvious boasting threads, as annoying advertising. Now boasting about our equine grandkids is DIFFERENT. :P

George, if your GSV2 is as good as you think, you should parlay your GSV2 bets, bankroll a GSV2 broodmare band and knock the Arabs back to the stone ages.

All kidding aside, if you are on the right track you should get it done.

George,
I hate to tell it to you, but Mr. Riddle used a pedigree analyst to advise him on the mating which produced War Admiral. I don't think you're the first, unless you're as old as that.

Angelsprite,

Did Riddle use a commercial pedigree analyst? (aka according to George's usage some who actually got paid for the analysis, and who didn't do it just to help the breed and/or to get in the good graces of someone who could offer them lucrative wrok as an agent).

Anyway, are you thinking of Elizabeth Daingerfield?
