Rivers Prayer: WHAT is Going On?

Postby ZiaLand » Sun Dec 31, 2006 3:14 pm

Can someone give me some insights here, because I'm baffled.

Rivers Prayer ran in a G1 Stakes race at Santa Anita on December 30th (yesterday) 7 furlongs on dirt and she came in dead last. Now I'm getting a Final Entry Notification that she's running again tomorrow (Jan 1) in the G3 Monvoria Handicap at Santa Anita, downhill on turf, 6-1/2 furlongs (definitely a much better choice for her running style, but what the heck?????).

Is this normal to expect a horse to run in two graded stakes, two days apart on different surfaces, especially finishing dead last in the last one? Did something happen that's not showing up in the results, like she lost her rider or something in the last race?

Any insights or comments welcome. Much thanks.

Hi Laurie!

Likely she will scratch and was entered in both places to cover bases or maybe there was a "deal" to fill a race. Bet the connections are kicking themselves that they maybe didn't choose the right race.

Unless they were using the race as a "work", which I doubt, although it wouldn't be unheard of, they will scratch her out of the 2nd race.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Thanks BJ. Yes, I think something is amiss. Rivers Prayer is only a 3YO and the Monrovia is supposed to be for 4YO & up.

Bet she'll be scratched.

Shes a 4 yr old-Sometimes equibase doesnt get the ages right when the new year comes around. They still have some races where the horses are still 2 yr olds and we all know there are no 2 yr old races in january of 07

Ageecee, great point!! I forgot the minor detail that at the stroke of midnight tonight she turns four.

Guess we'll see what happens tomorrow, then.
