Upsets in Aus

Postby wallinga » Fri Mar 02, 2007 11:47 pm

Aqua D'Amore wins the futurity over el segundo! first group one for danehill in over a season and first for coolmore in Aus since fastnet rock.

Then He's No Pie Eater (what a name) wins the chipping norton. pays 41 bucks. on paper doesn't look too well bred until you see his female side. Super Sexy!

I saw the Chipping Norton. Nice race. His dam is an American bred mare, as you know. I once owned a daughter by PETESKI, now a half sister to this new SW, but sold her to NZ where she is breeding away. I was sorry to see El Segunda lose the Futurity---he was bred by the Browns in New Zealand, old partners of mine in a stallion. They bred and raised all the Battle-Waggon stock that ran so well in Australia in the 60's and 70's. They are very nice people, as is Colin Little, El Seguno's trainer.

Who do you see as the top five for the Slipper? I haven't seen the result of the Kindergarten S. there today--any new contenders?

The winner forensics was more than impressive. Another of this outstanding crop of two year olds by Flying Spur

I see my top 5 in no particular order as;

Murtajill
Cammarilla
Danehill Smile
Shaft
Forensics

I've also added Zizou as she has had a very similar prep to miss finland last year.

The hawks brigade and the Hayes runners are all great chances and we'll get a better guide in the slipper previews as to which will run in the main event.

I also think that there is a nice race in Husson Lightning. My father imported it's great grand dam in the seventies, Rose Cottage and had alot of success with her. His farm is still named after her.

Redoutes Dancer also won the NZ Derby, Redoutes Choices first Derby winner, and to be honest it'll probably win our derby too if something with a bit of ticker doesn't stand up!

I see Forensics is out of a Dehere mare from the family of SNIPPETS. No wonder she has some gas. It seems to me that Flying Spur is having his best year?? In any event, it doesn't seem like a runaway for Encosta de Lago.

HUSSONET is a stallion to watch. I suspect he will be in your top sire's list by year's end if his crop number is sufficient. Im sure that Arrowfield did a great job filling it.

I'll have to study up on some of your other 2yo's. Im rooting for DANEHILL SMILE because I sold her dam, a Crafty Prospector filly, to a New Zealand client about ten years ago. I knew she'd cross well with all that Northern Dancer blood, but it took her a few foals to prove it.

CHOISIR looks from afar to be headed towards the heights. Thoughts?

And who is your Derby contender????

Zizou and Forensics are from the same family.

Hussonet is part of an awesome crop of first season sires they include Rock Of Gibraltar, Johannesburg, Orientate and Choisir so whoever gets their nose in front at seasons end will be pretty handy. Choisir needs to get his skates on, he always had a fairly ordinary dam side for mine.

They'll all have to catch flying spur for the two year old title. He promised so much and of course he is a slipper winner from that great fanfreleuch family (he is actually a half brother to the dam of Encost De lago) and he is also an adonis, he makes all his arrowfield barn mate look like lead ponies, but he really is hitting his straps. He has 2 year olds forensics, shaft and sleek chassis and his three year old colts (he was always known more for his fillies) Mentality and Casino Prince are both doing the job. It's funny Casino prince was won in a raffle at star city casino in sydney, lucky gambler!

Danehill Smile's only black mark is he's trained by Anthony Cummings who isn't a patch on his father. The horse just annihilated them last start though.

In the derby I see a few chances in what is a very week year for staying three year olds. They've already said Efficient won't run and I thought he was a moral. Musket, the half brother to Makybe Diva and an easter sale topper is in the spelling paddock. I'd have to say Danever in Melbourne or He's No Pie Eater and Teranaba in NSW are chances, there's a filly Tuesday Joy by Carnegie who is a chance for waterhouse, also Redoutes Dancer has entered calculations. However there is a controversy un ravelling there as we speak and there may have been a jigger involved. Tune in to Racing Retro on Sky if you can tomorrow for info.

If they would stop trying to make Haradasun a miler I think he'd be a real derby horse, he's a half to a vic derby winner by Fu Peg and his finishes are electric, I think they have their eyes on the dubai duty free with him though Elvstroem won that a few years back and they want to repeat the dose, he could probably beat the best three year olds on sand in the UAE Derby if they wanted too. The same target go's with miss finland, some how after today I don't think the same can be said of El Segundo

Dont think Haradasun is a derby horse even though he is bred like one. And its not in his best interests to run him over that distance anyway. As a future stallion prospect he needs to win G1's under 2000m(1 1/4mile)

I just don't think he can easilly do that, the Rosehill Guineas would be at his mercy and the UAE derby is only 1800m, they should take on some real classic tests, Elvstroem has proven to be commercial (at least in breeder response) despite his distance campaigns.
