Tiago's win in the SA Derby/HUGE run by King of the Roxy
I knew that Tiago would be flying from the back at the end: just like his half-brother Giacomo. He's a Pleasant Tap and should really go the distance: a very impressive run. I was also really impressed by King of the Roxy: this was a major run for him and he gave a great showing.

Well, Tiago won all the graded earnings he needed, and he didn't look as though he was blowing hard enough to extinguish a candle. The connections seemed to think the K.D. was the next stop.
He has that same come from behind style as Giacomo but with Giacomo it had to be timed absolutely right or it didn't work (and quite often with him it didn't work). I thought Tiago looked as though he could be more impressive in the long run than Giacomo.
It would be great to see Pleasant Tap sire a K.D. winner, I'm a big fan of his.

Sorry guys, this was the most uninspiring Santa Anita Derby I have seen in over 30 years. I don't see this horse, or anything behind him, within 10 lengths of the eastern horses this year. I mean, Tiago had never crossed the wire in front before today!! Hate to say it...but this Derby was mediocrity at its finest. And for $750,000!

King Of The Roxy and Sam P were both in a drive at the 3/8th pole and Liquidity came up flatter than a pancake. How can anyone be impressed by this race? Don't forget...this staggeriing bunch will be going an extra 1/8th next month.

I read about the closing fractions for the SA Derby and combined with the word that King of the Roxy is likely going straight to the Preaknes, I found it interesting. Supposedly Tiago did his last furlong in 13, KotR in 13 and change which the person I heard it from concluded to mean KotR was hitting the wall in their opinion and that Tiago's gonna find it hard to win the Derby closing with a 26 final quarter. Is this a case where things seem more visually impressive than they were?
I enjoy a few horses without making them my Derby picks so while I like Tiago for his connections, relation to Giacomo, and being by Pleasant Tap, I'm not sure what to think. It's like I like me some Nobiz for his own self and the Albert the Great connection but he pulled a 99 Beyer in the Wood. Hmm hmm hmm.

I heard it was 100 on the nose. Ever so slightly higher. Apparently he had 3 sub :24 quarters. I do enjoy Pleasant Tap and it was fun to watch Tiago in the SA Derby so I hope he does well.

How did the Mr Grinch song go? "The three words that best describe you are as follows and I quote....stink, stank, stunk." That pretty much sums up my opinion of Sam P, Liquidity, and the rest that finished behind them....not that Tiago's optical illusion finish and King Of The Roxy impressed me, either. From what I saw, the East Coasters don't have much to worry about from this race. Beats me why Notional's connections didn't opt for this spot.
I don't like Nobiz contesting a 1:10 split, though...he's going to have his problems at 1 1/4 mile with that gameplan - Sightsee didn't shift gears off the turn, but was flying at the end - if he were more seasoned, I think he would have won fairly handily. He's a nice prospect for the Travers.
