Putting my stats out for the world to see.

Postby Toccet02 » Tue May 22, 2007 1:12 pm

OK guys. I'm wearing my horse on my sleeve here.
When a horse catches my eye as having talent or good conformation, or will to win, something, I add them to my Virtual Stable.
I try to avoid adding a big horse that wins all the time already; I try to catch 'em early and track progress. I just did an analysis of the careers of my current stable...did averages and such. and will do this again and track over time to see if I improve. Here goes:

horses in stable 27

number of 2YO's 3 (they pull down averages)

average GSV 64.94

Most common dominant ancestor: Nasrullah (4 of 27)

average# of starts 11.48

average $ won to date $171,146

known injuries/illnesses: 4 horses (15%)1 ankle chip, 2 lung infections, 1 heel nerving (guess who!)

# of outcrosses (5 gen) 3 (11%)

Whaddaya think? Do I suck at "seeing" it?
or is this average?
Of course most of the info comes from this site so there may be margin for error, but I researched what I could.

Anyway it was fun. Opinions welcome.
Thanks for reading!

OK. Here I am a year later almost, much improved. No one replied to this original post, so maybe no one cares, but I'm putting my new figures up here for me, at least, as a record of my progress.

As of April 28, 2008:

Horses in stable: 30 (up from 27)

Number of 2YO's: 0 (down from 3) (none have run yet)

Average GSV: 64.68 (down from 64.94)

Most common dominant ancestor: Northern Dancer (5 of 30)

Average # of starts per horse: 18.13 (up from 11.48)

Average $ won per horse to date: $476,115 (up from $171,146)

**Added stat** Average purse won per start: $26,261 (up from $14,908)

Known injuries/Illnesses: 4 horses of 30 (13%): 1 heel nerving, 1 knee chip, 1 lung infection, 1 bad feet

Forget the outcross stats; probably worthless stat.

So--I have a better virtual stable this year! Although the numbers could be up in part at least to the absence of 2YO's. I do have a 3YO who has not started though, so her big 0's are included in these averages.
Any comments welcome. Or just smile at my data-geekiness.

Not knowing when you picked each horse in your stable makes it difficult to comment for me. You say you select horses early in their career. What percentage were maidens?; non winners of 1/2?; allowance?; stakes horses?

If you selected the majority early in their racing career I would say you have a good eye, an adept knowledge of pedigree and a good feel for those capable of developing said talent.

yeah, that's all hard to answer, as I have one catch my eye and add it often w/o knowing record.
The majority are claimers who never seem to get injured and keep making money.
Plus 3-4 millionaires that I likes as early stakes placed 3YO's.

Hey Toccet--

I love hearing about the stats gathered by other data nerds :D ... It sounds like your horses are doing quite well! Being a student and thus quite poor, I'm missing access to a lot of the data that you have. I'd love to keep track of earnings and sale prices, but I don't know of a way to find that information accurately without paying for it.

My 2004 crop that I'm tracking is doing fairly well, though. I have 22 colts and 24 fillies. Of those 46, 27 have made it to the races. They've amassed a total record of 143 starts, 39 wins, 26 places, and 22 shows. So they're winning at a 27% rate and being 1-2-3 at a 61% rate. 5 are stakes winners at this point.

My 2005 crop isn't doing quite as well so far, but I'm holding out hope for a couple promising ones...

Which horses are your millionaires?

Hey Toccet. Interesting info. To clarify: You chose 30 horses, majority claimers, and your average earnings per horse is over 450k?

I would say that's amazing. It makes it easier not picking Maidens, but those stats are very impressive.

Millionaires = Better Talk Now, Brother Derek, Nashoba's Key, Nobiz Like Shobiz, Weigelia.

Now---when I add horses from now on, I'm going to note when I added them and peg their "status" at that point.
Better Talk Now I added late, about a year and a half ago, but I honestly had no idea of his record. I saw those long legs and grit and said Wow! He skews my record with over 4 million. The others were picked pretty early in their careers.
On the opposite spectrum, I have 16 claimers , some of which dabble with allowance conditions occasionally or once did. But they've made a lot of money the hard way. Also none of my 2YO's have started yet.
But thanks guys---at the very least I SEEM to have an eye for those that don't snap legs all the time. (frantically knocks wood)
