The fairs are cutting their stakes program across the board, with the advice and consent of the TOC. The Bay Meadows Fair will not be offering any stakes! Instead, overnight races are receiving a purse boost. A number of the stakes races this summer do not meet the minimum purse level of $45,000 to receive black type, so even the owners of the winners of these races won't be happy to learn that either. These (N) races receive black type only in CTBA, WHBA and Arizona catalogs---not Keeneland, Fasig Tipton or OBS sales.
The larger purse stakes races, like the one today, are lucky to be funded at any level.
