Irish Derby

Postby Bill from WA » Mon Jul 09, 2007 3:25 pm

Soldier of Fortune easily won the 12 furlong Budweiser Irish Derby today. If there was ever a horse bred for distance of ground, it was this guy.
The Galileo son has a conduit mare profile of 3-3-3-10-8 (6/18) (0.41) (9-16-21), and traces to the great conduit mare, Pretty Polly (an influence for stamina). He just ran away from the field in the stretch.

I was lucky enough to attend the race and was right near the finish when the horse galloped home. It was an extremely impressive race, but, as expected, he was sweating heavily in the final strides of the race.

Is this race exactly 12 furlongs? Is 2:36 a good/bad/average time? The course is undulating although it is not easily recognizable on TV.

The time was a little slow, but the turf was soft for this running. Soldier of Fotune's sire, Galileo, won the same race in 2:27.10, but It was the ease in which Soldier of Fortune drew off in the stretch that impressed me.

I agree. I stood by the rail, watching him gallop down the stretch, with Seamus Heffernan hardly asking him for more run. Coolmore is doing an excellent job with propelling classic racehorses into classic siredom: Soldier of Fortune is one example of that.

The Pretty Polly family is a conduit for stamina and classic quality, but can also contribute to high-class sprinter-milers.

From Thoroughbred Heritage, some top sprinter-milers from the line include:
Nearctic, sire of Northern Dancer
Italian champion juvenile Donatella
Top British juvenile Arabella
Middle Park Stakes victor The Cobbler

I agree LaTroienne. She was a very versatile sort.

Bill, would you say that the most RECENTLY influential line of Pretty Polly in America is that of the Nangela branch?
Don't be so humble - you are not that great.

I would agree with that assessment. The interesting thing about Nangela's pedigree is the duplication of Pretty Polly both tail male and tail female.
Marvelous family of Joey Franco, Square Angel, Kamar, Gorgeous, Fantastic Light, Swain, Tap To Music, Northern Afleet, Golden Attraction, Cape Town, Seaside Attraction, Key To The Moon, and Taste Of Paradise et al.
