Del Mar breakdowns

Postby CA Michael » Mon Jul 30, 2007 5:11 pm

Two fatally injured in turf race

While the main track may be slow and tiring, no horses have suffered catastrophic injuries on it in the afternoon. On the turf, however, three horses have perished this meet, including two from injuries incurred in the first race on Sunday.

Lyrical Sound broke down in her left front ankle near the finish of the 1 1/16-mile race while racing in third place. After passing the wire, her rough action caused jockey Michael Baze to tumble over her head.

Baze was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, complaining of soreness in his upper left leg, but X-rays were negative, and he returned to ride the final three races on the card.

Lyrical Sound was led hobbling onto the horse ambulance, and minutes later was euthanized.

A little later, Mohawk also was euthanized because of injuries suffered in the race. She was pulled up on the first turn, but had suffered fractured sesamoids in both her front legs, track officials said.

On opening day, Mayor Bozarth broke down after being solidly bumped in a division of the Oceanside Stakes, and subsequently was euthanized

Many horses break down on turf, unfortunately. Saratoga's first race of the new meet had the favorite who appeared on his way to winning break down badly in the turn for home this past week. But 3 at Del Mar is frightening based on the small number of races run on the turf.

Curse Polytrack all you want but it appears much safer thus far and that's all that counts for the future of racing. Horrific breakdowns are racings worst nightmare from a PR standpoint.

Baffert's a has been who's about out of top notch stock. He brought it all on himself what with sales kick-back involvement etc. ...and with the passing of Bob Lewis he's now down to cheap horses with few exceptions. Zayat's horses are not running as hoped so he's doing the logical thing and moving on.

I'll venture to say Mott will be getting some more of them.

Baffert this meet is an autotoss... he couldn't win a race if he was the only entry.

Apparently Zayat and Del Mar president Joe Harper got into a big shouting match, complete with obscenities, today at the track. Harper's not the sharpest tack on the wall, but Zayat likely was stinging from the bad loss of his E Z WARRIOR yesterday in the Bing Crosby H. He's saying adios to California......I hope he takes Baffert with him wherever he goes.

The problem might be that they are training on a "softer" surface and then running on the notoriously firm turf course. HAve they had time to develop bone density they need to be efective and safe on ahardwe surface? Nope... The epic saga continues.... Everyone wants to jump on the boat and are fast to bail when it becomes evident that the nay sayers were right about the short comings of the alt. surfaces... I used to say 5-10 and California is back on dirt... I think I'll shorten up that bet!

What have you heard about the soft tissue and hind end injury rate on poly? I understand it's unusually high--like they are trading one injury for another.

Let me guess: all those with 5 and more crosses of Phalaris and 60 and more crosses of St. Simon and more than 200,000 crosses of Eclipse?

And some of those which a lesser number of crosses, if there are any.

Is this, what you want to say?
