Must be nice to have deep pockets.....

Some of you act as if expensive yearlings that can't run worth a lick are a recent phenomenon, but they've been around for decades. It's just that the numbers are bigger ... There was a day when paying $100,000 for a yearling made the front page! Heck, Man O War stood for stuf fee of $5,000!

SNAAFI DANCER, 1982, by Northern Dancer-My Bupers, was the world's most expensive yearling at $10.2 million. When the Sheiks were told the horse couldn't beat his own shadow, they retired him to stud as an unraced stallion prospect. When they learned that Snaafi was sterile, they gelded him and made a hunter out of him. Happy hunting!!

Tasmanian Tiger was a Coolmore Keeneland topper at $6.8 Million and was gelded after two or three starts...he eventually wound up in Hong Kong.

Back in 1994, Mack Miller cut a $525,000 Storm Cat named Leap To Flame after having the horse in the barn for only three days...the horse was a total rogue that wouldn't train. Those were the days when some owners still thought that a colt had to earn its way to the breeding shed. *sigh*
