John Nerud and Clabber Girl

Postby TJ » Sat Nov 24, 2007 7:36 pm

I guess at least some of us remember these two greats:>) Mr. Nerud (now 93 years young) has been sending his $1,000,000 plus earner, Clabber Girl (soon to be 25 years old) to the youngster AP Jet ($2,500 stud fee and only 18 years old:>) over the last few years. Two from that mare by AP Jet won yesterday at Aqueduct (Running Dog and Wing Man) and tomorrow he runs another 2YO full sister to them in the 6th race, her name is Curtains. You can see the genius of this man in breeding to the Rasmussen Factor, not once but twice thru this cross. RF appears thru Killaloe's 1/2 siblings Fappiano and Jedina and again via Two Lea's (that's not a misprint) 1/2 sibs Tim Tam and On and On. It's like Tartan Farm meets Calumet Farm in the 21st century :>) He's a firm believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it :>) I just had to pass this on to some that would appreciate looking at the pedigree of these horses. They haven't been real world beaters but have consistently gone out there and grinded out a good living plus the NY breeders bonuses, Nerud gets a little extra pin money. TJ

Hi BDW,
This is a very deep NY Bred race, I wasn't really touting the horse as a winner as much as Mr. Nerud's breeding genious. Although he did work a bullet 1/2 over a fast Bel tr.t (47Hg 1/81). Take a closer look before you jump :>) TJ

John Nerud has had a bunch of AP Jet homebreds that he's given to Mike Hushion. Some are OK and some can't outrun a pregnant elephant. I don't think breeding Clabber Girl to AP Jet is "genius" - AP Jet is the sire Nerud uses for all his old, wrinkled mares.

AP Jet might not be much of a sire, but he's a better sire than John Nerud is. Where is Jan these days...in some opium house in Afghanistan? Even Karen Rogers couldn't straighten that guy out. Jan had such a great eye for stable help that he had "Vegas" Tony Sbarra working for him. LOL!

Hey TJ....a while ago, John Nerud was sending his mares to Ogygian. What was the "genius" behind that thinking?

Oh, Ok Roke, my bad--sounded like a family knock to me:>) Is Sbarra still in Vegas making tout sheets? You know, Sbarra was a maniac but he knew his way around a horse. Now if you get a chance pull up the 4 gen on that horse, the pedigree mix is interesting--at least to me and every horse from that mare was a winner.
How about Dave Jacobson and Hugable Tom? TJ

Jacobson put Hugable Tom on the Slimfast diet.

Nerud sends all his mares to AP Jet. Most of the foals are running up at Finger Lakes, so the cross might work with Clabber Girl, but I think it's coincidence more than genius.

Speaking of Finger Lakes...do you remember Ludwig Lamm? Whatever happened to that guy?

Vegas Sbarra couldn't pick his nose and he thought he could put out a tout sheet - pretty funny. I don't know what happened to him. He always had those weepy eyes, but the guy was as strong as an ox.

Hey Roke,
He'll send Clabber Girl to him till she goes to horsey heaven, all six figure earners. The key to that cross is the RF, will you just take a look all ready. I'm reading a good book, It's called The Coincidental Genius, have you read it?:>)
I remember Louie (Ludwig) Lamm. The last time I saw him he still had stalls at Aqueduct, I think he passed away. TJ

The Coincidental Genius? Unless it has pictures and a centerfold, I doubt that I've read it.

Lamm bit the dust, huh? Too bad - nice guy. I don't know why I thought of him after all these years except for mentioning Finger Lakes.

Do you remember why John Nerud gave Clabber Girl to Lukas instead of to Jan? It was around the same time that Tartan sent Codex to Lukas. Why was that, come to think of it? I know Jan was training at that time because he had Dr Patches.

Curtains didn't run well today, darn it - she's a good looking filly (or at least she was a good looking foal). The chart says she was bumped at the start and ran greenly.

Clabber Girl was initially with Jan Nerud. Eventually, however, Clabber Girl was sent out to Lukas as he trained in California. They thought she'd do better training out there (according to John Nerud in 2007).

From California, Lukas shipped her all over the place to run. As Nerud put it, "She had a frequent flyer ticket. She made a million dollars, and I spent $500,000 in airplane fees."

Clabber Girl's 2007 foal is by Performing Magic (also a Nerud stallion).

Thanks for the heads-up, TJ! Clabber Girl's been a long-time favorite of mine.
