Bob Baffert on Talkin' Horses

Postby majxmom » Thu Mar 27, 2008 8:00 pm

Here's part 1 of Bob's two part segment (part 2 on sunday):

I cracked up on the question about how to handicap synthetic tracks, and he said, "Put on a blindfold and mark your program." :D

What else would you expect from a speed, hick, Quater horse trainer who just lost his horses to an owner who finally saw the light.

If this (I will hold myself back) idiot thinks his oh so hilarioso comments can make the poly's obsolete than he is even more retarded than originaly thought. the poly is no more difficult to handicap than any other track. This dumb tard has forgot that rain changes a track and every other race track you go to has a different composition that also reacts differently. Maybe if he didn't lose his biggest client a quote from him would have been at best somewhat useful. Never mind just give us a double thumbs up when you get to the barn at 9:15am BB. How can you be an expert on track surfaces though when you are never there in the morning when horses are on the track???? Whateve...maybe Los Al will give BB 20 stalls, he can complain about the synths all he wants over there.

why ask a poly question, knowing damn well what ones response is going to be. Come On (ala G.O.B).

I am not a Baffert fan, however, this speed, hick, Quarterhorse trainer has won an Eclipse Award as top trainer 3 times, has trained 9 Eclipse Award winning horses, has trained 3 horses that vied for a Triple Crown and has total earnings over 127M, 5th all time for earnings. He may well be an idiot and a publicity seeking hound, and we all are entitled to our opinions, but BOB BAFFERT - RETARD, is a bit much don't you think?

Ascot, if you had said that about a fellow poster, I think Roguelet would be giving you a time out, so perhaps you should reconsider your words. I'm not a Baffert fan either, but give the man credit for his accomplishments.

I agree with Dave C.. There's nothing wrong with having an opinion, but yours is worded offensively enough that you risk losing credibility. I think it's perfectly possible for any reasonable adult to express their dislike/disagreement of someone without stooping to name calling.

I agree with all of you, and I probably have more retard in me than Baffert. We actually just hired someone who worked for him for 4 years. I do think that his comments are just as off base as mine was though, and after a while his training accomplishments start to get overshadowed by his annoying antics.

That's why I hired someone who worked for him.

Whatever anyone's opinion of him as a trainer is, he is darned entertaining to listen to! I heard him on Imus around the War Emblem time, and he was describing his stint as a jockey. It was a laugh riot. He said, "The last horse I rode was 30-1, and 29 of it was me." And, "I asked my friends, 'Why don't you ride me?' and they said, 'We'd rather be friends.'" He makes fun of his own propensity to sleep in. You gotta love a guy who is that self-deprecating.

My own opinion is that whatever success he had, he developed himself. He was a small-time QH trainer, and one of the biggest owners in QHs called him up and gave him a champion to train because he liked BB's results with claimers. Then he developed a clientele that had the money to support him in TBs like Pegram, but when he actually went exclusively to TBs, he developed more horses like Thirty Slews and Cavonnier, and got the really big time clients like the Lewises and the Prince. I don't think I could do that.

We all could name trainers that have had minor success that were gifted into the business by contacts with wealthy clients. BB got those clients the hard way by developing lower level horses and moving them up. I do think that his lack of current success has something to do with some of his tools being taken away, perhaps milkshaking and the like, but also he has developed a standard for what he likes in a horse based on speed, and now that this paradigm has changed, we will see from evolution which of the strong survive. Darwin rules!

I hear what you're saying, I can take criticism, I don't take much personally. I use that term as someone who is stupid or an idiot. I thought Bafferts comments about the poly and most things are idiotic. I'm young enough that the term retard was not PC and was never used for handicapped people when I grew up. I too have worked with handicapped people for a summer, and personally I find there are a lot of people who are not handicapped who deserve the label of being retarded.
What I was commenting about is the fact that just because I think the guy is an idiot does not mean I'm oblivious to what he has done as a trainer. He is like a little kid and is crying because his toy was taken away. You can be in the hall of famer and still be an idiot...P Val fits the criteria as well (on a different level).
I'm sorry if I have offended you and I removed the comment, but I stand by everything I wrote about him, because that's what I believe.

I would think that there are not any members of the Racing Hall of Fame that were/are idiots about doing their job, maybe idiotic at other facets of their lives, as most of us are.

Baffert stated, "I believe if you take away basic medications those who want to take edge will continue to do so with things we've never heard about (cobra venom, etc). I believe the less medication allowed the more cheating you will have."

That is quite a theoretical synopsis. Make drugs readily available and eliminate the need to cheat..
