some of PETA's tactics only make them look like fools and it's sad because their hearts are in the right place but doing things like that is detrimental to the cause. I think a few of their requests or points are valid and in all of this i can only hope more research is done and in a basic sense everything is done to protect the horses. I'm not PETA nor do i want horseracing banned, only want those gorgeous animals protected as much as possible from those who would use drugs, poor training, neglect, etc.

Maybe at root the PETA folks just hate horses? If racing was banned, I can GUARANTEE the USA would have a LOT less horses in it! Maybe 40,000 a year or so?

As for them looking like idiots, well a rose by any other name would still smell the same...

Like any idea based organization PETA has a range of agenda about animals. The hard core folks believe that animals should live free, without any human contact, and domestic animals which can't live free are killed by PETA members to end their suffering. This of course is something that the PETA folks don't talk about.

I wouldn't want any animal to fall into the hands of PETA.

As a former zookeeper of many years I have been privy to hearing about the PETA way of thinking time and time again, and all I have to say is this:

These are the requirements for PETA membership:

1. A highly dangerous level of insanity
2. A complete lack of common sense
3. A complete lack of true understanding of anything animal related

I will be happy to beat down PETA and their insane idiots all day and night, but I don't want anyone trying to draw the conclusion that therefore I don't care about equine safety. However, rather than give PETA any more recognition or "air time," I would suggest that the racing industry turn toward a much more sane and productive means of dealing with the issues; beginning here:

Say what you want about PETA but who do you think is winning the public relations war currently?

Look at the overwhelming media attention over the death of Eight Belles-much of this is PETA driven. Here's the lead paragraph in a Bloodhorse "don't take PETA lightly piece"

"Though their views and actions may at times be considered extreme and bizarre by some, animal rights and welfare groups have a large constituency, have proven effective at making their point, and shouldn't be disregarded when they seize on an issue, officials said."

You don't think the Jockey Club and NTRA are commissioning a committee to review equine health, including breeding practices, medication, the rules of racing and track surfaces because of the PETA driven media campaign over Eight Belles death?

PETA and similar groups might have a very radical perspective of animal rights in general and horseracing specifically but if there were not a grain of truth in the message, their media impact would not be nearly as effective.

I don't know that they are winning the public relations war as much as the mass media might make one think, but you've a good point -- racing cannot completely ignore them just because they're on the lunatic fringe. In fact, racing COULD use the publicity to score a reversal of the field by taking prompt action on the drug issue, which is racing's biggest black eye IMO. Announcing stiffer restrictions on medication use and stiffer penalties for violators while public attention is still focused on the sport would be an excellent move IMO...though I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen, alas/

That's the problem.... a few in the media with a similar agenda have a HUGE bullhorn and the lemmings hop aboard their latest cause(which is anti-horse racing). They're completely ignorant of the subject matter but run off emotion and the wheels are soon turning.



At this time nobody has the guts to stand up for racing so be prepared to be plowed under.


Mark my words.... 100 years from now this will be a nation of tofu and granola crunchers with all meat consumption outlawed. The glory days of this country are behind it the same way the sun may very well be setting on one of the most thrilling endeavors ever witnessed as horse racing is the target of the loons and nary a Congressman has enough testosterone(pun intended) to stand them down. Secretariat will be but a grainy memory from the distant past being referred to as "before the US was civil" as per the granola gang.
