While we’re all waiting for the Belmont to start, I thought we needed another game to play… I said in a previous post that I’ve always liked rooting for an underdog. (I was the idiot rooting for Sham in 1973…) One of my other loves of the sport is finding stories about horses that were bought for a song and then went on to become major stakes winners. (I like to amuse my non-TB fan friends with this kind of stuff.) Anyone can buy a winner if your pockets are as deep as the Maktoums; but you get a special place in history in my book if you’re broke and just plain lucky…
So in no particular order (and forgive me if I get some of this wrong, since I’m going off the top of my head), here are my candidates. Please feel free to correct or add:
John Henry (purchased by Sam Rubin for $25,000.00)
Holy Bull (inherited for free by Jimmy Croll)
Skipaway (purchased for $22,500.00 by Sonny Hine for wife Carolyn)
Stymie (claimed for $1,500.00 by Hirsh Jacobs)
Miesque’s Approval (claimed for $50,000.00 by Marty Wolfson)
Alsab (purchased for $700.00)
Red Rum (purchased by Ginger McCain for a very small sum, only horse to ever win the Grand National three times)
Biggest/Best TB values in history

as previously stated, seattle slew was bought for 17,500.
I read somewhere that there was a major stallions dam.. like bold ruler or raise a native, whose dam was bought for 1200 bucks. that's some value. could it have been gold digger?
I just don't think any better value is better than seattle slew. not only did he rack in at the track, they made upwards of 500k a pop at the hight of his stud career.

Miesque's Approval was never claimed. He ran for $50,000 while trained by Bill Mott for Live Oak but wasn't claimed. When he was transferred to Marty Wolfson he was still owned by Live Oak.
