How well does ACTH as a pre race medication work? Does it calm the horse down significantly?

Like every drug, the response varies. Some horses show no affect and some show some relaxation. I personally don't think it works often enough to spend the money. There are other things I like better.

I had a horse at Sunland this winter with a trainer I didn't know, but a partner wanted to use him.

After the horse left, I got big bills for ACTH and steroids.

Now, one heats the horse up, the other cools him down.

A good example of going to the needle instead of good training.

And, I am talking about a bunch of both drugs used on my horse in a very short time.

Never again. The horse is now running drug free and doing great.

When a pre-race vet bill is 3, 4, 5 hundred bucks, things a getting ridiculous.

People use ACTH way too much with little real results. BUT it's what they do have always done and will continue to do
