Toeless shoes

Postby griff » Sat Feb 21, 2009 3:27 pm

What is the fall out from banning toes on shoes??

A good friend of mine says it's causing a lot of proplems for young horses breaking from the gate; i.e., many more are going down out of the gate and some jockeys are getting hurt.

front shoes never need toe grabs on any surface, on poly no toe grabs are needed front or hind. on dirt track the horses should have toe grabs on the hinds. on turf no toe grabs are needed.

the victory XLT(xtra low toe) has a toe grab hight of 4mm. i hear the new rules are going to be 2mm. either way your talking a hair or two not a big difference.. toe grabs on poly track surfaces in my opinion are detremental to the horse. on dirt tracks not so much. if they really want to get to the bottom of the life threatening breakdowns they should start looking at the vet work thats being done on these horses. i'll stop there.

seems like the condition of the dirt track would be a factor. Whether is a hard track or a soft track

there is nothing nicer than a dirt track with the right amount of moisture and cushion.

There is some difference of opinion on toes, no toes, shoes, no shoes...
Some people will tell you barefoot on the synthetics is the way to go. Others will say that low toes behind are the way to go to lessen injury. Keep in mind horses ought to be trained as individuals. What works for one may or may not work for another.

I had one at GGF and tried no toes; toes behind; toes front and toes on all four. Finally found the right combination-a van ride to Turf Paradise..
