I would say any horse which can excel both in flat and jump races is versatile in a class of its own.

Some horses in fact started off racing career in flat races, and later made inroads into jump events.

I guess most of these defectors didn't manage to impress their connections with the earlier endeavors.

A good analogy is Ping Pong, which is overwhelmingly popular and competitive in China, so many
players were turfed out to other sports which are less crowded.

The Tin Man too was among the rarest of rare that won a G1 at age 9.

Although we are discussing versatility ,not durability I guess that the two eventually go hand in hand. My vote goes to the incredible Sea Pigeon who was a top class handicap runner going long on the flat and then won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham twice I think at an advanced age. It must be mentioned that Red Rum did win on the flat going 5 furlongs before he was a wonder horse steeplechaser.

Yes...Sea Pigeon did win twice in Chester Cup and the 1979 version of Ebor H...If I am not wrong..they
are listed races...nevertheless..this should not overwhelm his versatility as well as durability.

Raffles Hotel, Singapore Sling...Wilf..you must be well versed with tropical tracks.....read your earlier posts
....not just only involved in racing in NA and OZY...seems you reside near an Aus stud too ?

Exterminator.

Won 50 out of 100 races (only ran unplaced 16 times), at distances ranging from 5.5 furlongs to 2 1/4 miles. Took on all comers, carried weight, wasn't bothered by travel, or fussy about track condition. Even human connections didn't matter to him - he had eight different trainers and won for all of them.

They didn't run on turf in his day, but that probably wouldn't have bothered him, either.
