Indian Blessing and the Pro-Ride Surface at Santa Anita

Postby UmmYeah » Tue Oct 27, 2009 9:57 am

Okay, I'm confused. According to this story on DRF (http://www.drf.com/news/article/108414.html), Indian Blessing will not run in the Breeder's Cup because Baffert claims she doesn't like the track.

----excerpt----
"She just doesn't like the track," he said. "What can you do? She looks good. It's frustrating."
----excerpt----

But how is that possible? How does she hate the track, if she owns the track record for 7 furlongs? Is Baffert giving a snow job here, or did the track really change that drastically from the time she set the record to now?

She owns the Track Record? That's news to me.

Same "Santa Anita", different surfaces?

Cushion Track was installed at Santa Anita for their 2007-2008 meets. As a result of drainage problems, Cushion Track was replaced by a Pro-Ride surface in the summer of 2008.

her winning races there:

13-Jan-08 Indian Blessing Santa Anita, gr 2 stk, $90,000, 7 f, 1:19.89. Indian Blessing (f, 3yo)

27-Dec-08 Indian Blessing Santa Anita, gr 1 stk, $150,000, 7 f, 1:20.89. Indian Blessing (f, 3yo)

Here's the Santa Anita track records: http://www.oaktreeracing.com/content/track-records

All Weather records are at the bottom of the page.

But if this record was set before the switch to Pro-Ride, I guess that makes sense.

The track was also completely redone over the summer.

But she came back this year to run though. I remember him saying that she came back to her stall upset, but he did bring her back this year. Hes confusing.

IB needs a rest, she is talking to Baf, & he is listening, as those leading trainers will back off & wait for another day. Congrats Baf for your patience with her, it will pay dividends.

Louis, that may be the case, but if so, Baffert is a liar. In that article, he says that she looks good, he was happy with her work and condition, and that he wants to run her on a dirt track, which, to me, sounds quite different from needing rest.

Louis, I'm not questioning you, necessarily. I'm just saying that if they tell you one thing, and they tell the trade papers something else, that's fishy.

The quote bolded above and attributed to Bob Baffert seems to mirror what Garret Gomez has said (but not in the above referenced DRF article) about the Santa Anita Pro-ride surface...

...that some horses spin their wheels on the Santa Anita Pro-Ride.

Are there trainers that don't "stretch the truth"?
