hi spex4me

I too think that's pretty darn cool 8) ...and one heck of an accomplishment.

Okay...so what if 16-year-old apprentice jockey Tyler Kaplan's mount carried a mere 113 (as compared to the favorite carrying 123); so what if Tyler Kaplan was on the $2.80 second choice/favorite; so what if his mount bumped with the $1.90 favorite in late stretch; so what if there was no Mike Smith riding in the race, no Rafael Bejarano, no Joel Rosario, no Joe Talamo, no Victor Espinoza, no Alex Solis, etc.

And so what (per the DRF chart) if Tyler Kaplan's mount 1/ was steadied; 2/ was shuffled back; 3/ came out off heels leaving the turn; 4/ was lugging in through the final furlong; 5/ bumped with Lucy Got Lucky in late stretch. After all...

that's horseracing.

Seems (to me anyway) a BIG congrats to 16 year-old apprentice jockey Tyler Kaplan is in order. He got the job done...and broke his maiden  (if you will) first time out, at Santa Anita no less.

That's gotta be a rare feat, don't ya think?

So does he get out of school early if he has a mount?

Watched the race live on HRTV. He had much the best horse but will say this.. The horse really ran for him. He needs a lot of polish and experience. Best of luck to him.

Spex I would not be at all surprised if you adopted him and he rode for you at Colonial. I will be checking the entries.

That is why apprentices need the ten pounds. ;) It should last longer (at least 10 wins) and so should the five pounds IMHO. It takes a lot longer than a year to get going. Most apprentices starve when they lose their bug, no matter how successful they were that year. :)

It is nice to see such a happy young face win, and I am impressed that he finished high school at 14 and has set his sights high. Congrats on a nice start! :)

Ok so yes he had, um some....um, well let's just say advantages in the way things played out on this particular day lol!!! I watched the race too, it surely wasn't pretty but he got the job done (or perhaps the horse did haha). I too thought it was very good to see that he did finish his education, hopefully he continues with it because yes the apprentice years are very much a soft cloud before the cold hard landing of journeyman.

And WILF!!!! He's too young for me.... hahaha and as long as he doesn't take 'em 20 wide I will consider him lmao!!!! Now if he starts raking in the mouhlah I will adopt him  !!
