Palm Meadows and The KY Derby

Postby TJ » Mon Nov 15, 2010 5:28 pm

The stable gate's opened up at Palm Meadows last week with Tommy Albertrani and Todd Pletcher the first to arrive. True to recent tradition it will be home to many of this seasons 2 YO's with an eye on the Derby. To mention a few who trained here for the Derby....Super Saver, Big Brown, Street Sense, Barbaro and Funny Cide, not too bad 5 of the last 8 Derby winners trained at Palm Meadows. This year three top contender's Uncle Mo, Boys At Tosconova and the latest sensation for Nick Zito, Dialed In......for those who don't know him watch this maniac get the job done after being in more trouble than any horse can get in and still win.....let's hope that lugging in through the lane was just that he was running green.....he will be easy to spot....he misses the break big time, so watch for him dead last!!! Guess you're not a fan of Zito, me either....but War Pass is alive and well. He didn't fracture both ankles, it was his left fore. Concerning Bailey, he has no room to talk about people...I'll leave it at that. This Zito colt is pretty big, he's either green or has problems considering it's mid November and we're just hearing from him. One thing's for sure, Dialed In certainly has some raw talent. TJ

Yeah, but he had 2 fractures in the same ankle. I was at that Tampa Bay Derby, where he ran like he already had the fractures. He didn't run well enough to beat me. Zito was standing at least 5 feet from me and looked suicidal. Derby at all costs.

Not being an East Coast person, I don't pretend to know the cast of characters out there, but I admit that I am disappointed at the opinions expressed about Zito here. I visited Gulfstream a few years ago on a rainy weekday. The program was filled with big-name trainers and I was looking forward to seeing some of them, but the only one who was actually present in the saddling paddock was Zito. He showed up to saddle a bottom-class maiden in the rain, who probably ran as expected--poorly. All the other trainers sent their ATs and went home to be comfortable. I was impressed by Zito that day. I would be sad to think he put his ego ahead of the best interest of his colts.

TJ I think it was you, I never told you this, the day big brown broke his maiden,I made a post here. i was like dude, that's a racehorse. But, then he disappeared. Someone, i'm sure it was you said that he was outworking Diamond Stripes on the dirt, and I put a future wager in on him, not a huge one, a 50 dollar wager on him for the derby, at 170 to 1. Actually bought my last car off that wager

Just goes to show, there's a bit of good in the worst of us, and a bit of bad in the best of us.

Hi bdw,
Yes, that was me.....I got to watch Big Brown train a lot that year and kept a running post here with his exploits. If I remember correctly it was a 3/4 work. I hope you named the car "Brownie"....that's what they called him around the barn:>) Diamond Stripes, along with the other's Dutrow sent to Dubai with Prado that year cost Edgar the mount on Big Brown because it was run the same day as the Florida Derby......Dutrow was so high on Big Brown that he didn't go to Dubai so he could stay in Florida to saddle Brownie....I think Ricky won two in Dubai that day? Hi bdw,
At my age I like to double check to see if the mind is still sharp:>) Here was the original post:

TJ Posted: Sat Dec 22, 2007 12:02 pm Post subject: Big Brown
This soon to be 3YO hasn't missed a beat since he arrived at Palm Meadows. Brown registered his 5th breeze since November 29th this AM. Although he's touted as a grass horse, his dirt moves have been quite encouraging with only one of his five works being on the turf course. He worked 3/4's in company with Diamond Stripes today over a slightly slow and tiring track. IF (such an appropriate word to begin this next sentence:>) he continues to train like this on the dirt, I believe he will be a real threat in both Derby's, Florida and Kentucky. TJ

You never bet $50.00 on a horse in your life. What future book did you place the bet with?

Great comeback, only thing is my mother would at least tip you to a horse that would win. See, your problem has always been you post so many entries that you forget half of what you say. For instance, you post about being a handicapper and professional horse player then later on you will say you don't wager too much, so one never knows what to believe. The one thing I do know about you is that you are not what you pretend to be because if you were what you think you are you would be able to tell me where you placed this future bet on Big Brown and got him at odds of 170-1 instead of going to the "mothers", which also tells me something I had guessed about you but now know for sure.
