Uncle Mo to Timely Writer or Tampa?

Postby oliverstoned » Thu Feb 17, 2011 9:40 am

First of nice to see a race named after one of my all-time favorites (does Suffolk still have a Timely Writer?). Will running a one turn mile then the Wood have him fit enough? Do you think TP would just rather Brethern go up to Tampa to allow him two more races before the Derby?

Hi Oliver,
I think they were hoping to draw Dialed In and Uncle Mo and shut out Tampa Bay's recent top 3YO migration there for their Derby. Zito was happy with the timing, but not with the distance, said if it was a 1 1/8th he would have used it....now Zito's seriously considering the Fountain of Youth for Dialed In.
I think Pletcher has a real tough decision to make here considering the distance of this prep....I know one thing, it's hard to ship to Tampa and win if you haven't trained or worked over the track....not to mention it would be his first start at 1 1/8th miles. Street Sense was beaten over that track in the Tampa Derby. It makes sense what you said Oliver...send Brethren back to Tampa? With Tim Ritvo in a postion of power at GP I think we'll see more race changes to keep their horses on the grounds instead of shipping elsewhere. This race makes sense for horses that have enough graded earnings and aren't looking to squeeze the lemon dry in the Fountain Of Youth and simply a tightener kind of race. That's why Pletcher will have to figure out what's best for his 2YO champ. He can always use this race and work him an 1/8th or 1/4 past the finish line and almost get just as much out of the race as he would going 1 1/8th? Will be interesting to see how this develops....TJ

Hi TJ,

The TBD is at 1 1/16 but still with that tiring track and not racing since Nov. it's asking alot. Some think he's Pegasus and it won't matter, me I'm not so sure. I know the old schoolers would bring him back at 7/8ths in Feb. (guess that ship sailed). I think going in the TW is kind of Peppers Prideish and not in his best longterm interests. Of course if he comes to Tampa I get to see him up close and personal, so I may be a bit biased.

Hi Oliver,
Thanks for waking me up....1 1/16th, but it's like going 1 1/8th if you've never been over that course:>) I was thinking he might try the Hutchenson, but it looks like Pletcher isn't so sure he's ahead of schedule anymore? He really hasn't been doing that much since his time off at Crupi's farm so I guess waiting on him is the best move. I think this dilemma comes about because his owner wants to run in the Wood. This new handicap race would have been a perfect prep, then go to the Florida Derby with him....rather than shipping where ever for a prep.....then get in the van back to NY run in the Wood then back in the van to ship to Kentucky. It would be so much easier to stay here....get two preps then ship one time to CD....then when it's over on to NY. Last season they kept Palm Meadows open later than usual for Pletcher so he could stay in Florida and prep Super Saver for the Derby. TJ

Timely Writer is oft forgotten, but he was one helluva racehorse. The talented chestnut was trained by one of racings unique, and lovable (despite sometimes finding himself in trouble/in the dog house  with the stewards) characters...Domenic Imprescia.

His assistant for years was Oliver 'Buddy' Edwards (any relation oliverstoned?); a gentle and kind-hearted big teddy-bear kind-of-a-guy, who ultimately went out on his own. Buddy was a sweetheart of a guy, liked by all, and unfortunately died quite young. Domenic too had a heart of gold...but maybe a teeny measure of larceny    in him (if you will).

WOW...the name Timely Writer conjurs up some memories :) .

Hi FOS,
An old friend rubbed him...Ambrose Pascucci, he still kicks around training in New England and did a stint in NY years back. He was actually a bay horse, no white....but his glow of health could show up near to chestnut. Here's a great story about him and his connections......also a link to his Champagne win. TJ

Thanks so much.

I enjoyed reading the story you linked, mucho.

Dom Sr was a lovable, gentle man; Dom Jr may have meant well but didn't seem to have the same passion for the game...and seemed to mess-up (if you will), and disappoint (seemingly regularly) a patient Sr.

Reality is...Dom Sr was a kind and gentle man; and Timely Writer was a helluva good racehorse.

Ambrose Pascucci was clearly passionate and trusted, and big 'Buddy' Edwards (also passionate, but not mentioned in the article) was also trusted by Dom Sr and (to my understanding) considered like family. And you're right, Timely Writer was a bay who sometimes glowed, and may have appeared to have a chestnut hue.

When it comes to Boston/Suffolk horseracing history, the names Dom Imprescia Sr, Peter and Franny Martin, and Frankie Bertolino (a meat business competitior of the Martin bros; who Everard bought horses for too) must be among the included. Talk about colorful characters...Wow.

Hi FOS,
I thought you would enjoy that article, Buddy Edwards was a heck of a trainer himself, he passed away down here in Florida 6 years ago. Here's another article you will enjoy, pointing out Edward's association with Imprescia. TJ

In 1981 I was 14 and got a job after school working at a small TB breeding farm. The schoolbus would drop me off there and I'd work like a dog 'til dark for 2.50hr and loved every minute of it. The owner let me take old Bloohorse Mags home and later those Mare Produce record books. I soaked it all up (back then I was more oliver than stoned). About the same time the proverbial Uncle began taking me to the track, mostly Keystone and Monmouth. Timely Writer sealed it for me when I saw this horse with a budget pedigree soaring to those heights.....I was hooked for life. I loved that horse and cried like a little girl when he broke down.

Me too...but then, I was one. ;) It was Timely Writer, along with Pleasant Colony, that piqued my interest in racing (the interest in horses was already there, as it is in most nine year old girls) - he was often featured in the Boston newspapers, as the local boy making good.

I remember I was staying at a friend's house the day of the JCGC and missed the race, didn't find out what happened until the next day. I clipped the article from the paper, but it vanished, which got me upset all over again....turns out it was inadvertently used to wrap potato peelings. My mother felt awful, and to this day still clips and saves every racing article she sees for me! Hardly necessary at this point but I haven't the heart to tell her to stop. ;)
