What does this mean on a race chart?

Stopped, far back, distanced.
Shows as did not finish...

"Stopped" in the context of a race means the horse was not moving fast enough to be competitive. A horse on the lead suddenly overwhelmed in the stretch as he runs out of speed is said to have "stopped".

"Far back" is just that. Zenyatta was far back in the early going of last years BC Classic. If she had continued to fall back, and made no attempt to close ground, she would have been described as "distanced".

Bast, thanks. I've have seen first hand a "stopped" horse, and far back...but never seen distanced referred to before.
Any guesses why such a horse wouldn't have finished the race if it didn't breakdown?

A distanced horse who still finishes is entitled to whatever part of the purse so earned. Think of the horses third and farther back in Secretariat's Belmont.

Secretariat's Belmont certainly paints the picture of distanced! Makes sense.

In Secretariat's Belmont, Sham was indeed distanced.

The 1973 Belmont saw the entire field being outclassed, not just distanced, by one big guy :

Secretariat covered the 1st 6f at 1:09 3/5...just a fraction off the legendary King's Bishop winning time of that year's Fall Highweight Handicap at Aqueduct (in olden times short races were scarce).

Secretariat covered 1&1/4 mile at 1:59.00 flat, a would be KY Derby all-time fastest time.

He was dueling up to the midpoint with Sham...which finished last...over 31.

Any one of these events is jaw-falling.

they use distanced a lot in the harness game where a horse may break stride and lose tons of ground. The driver will get him back on stride and ease him in. Too far back to realistically apply a number of 'lengths' behind the winner.
