Flashpoint's Owner Issues Challenge

Postby zinn21 » Wed Mar 02, 2011 12:15 pm

Owner John Fort is going to use the 7 furlong Swale Stakes as his Derby prep and issued a challenge the the owners of The Factor to meet them in the Swale. Fort stated:

>>“He’s extremely fast, he’s extremely sound, and he has a very even temperament, so why not use the ace I’ve been dealt? He has a massive hip and I could run him in the Florida Derby and he might win, but I don’t want to run him two turns and have him get tired and run the race of his life before the Derby. So, let’s try to do it a different way this year and train up to the Derby using his natural speed. It’s not the traditional method, but there are so many horses now who go into the Derby off only two starts at 3, and it’s now become popular to have more time between races. So, who’s to say this can’t be done?

Fort said he hasn’t spoken with trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. yet, but this is the way he is leaning at this point.<<

I wonder how Dutrow feels about this?

Hi Z,
All the connections are willing to do this, both owner's spoke with each other and at this point it's up to Gulfstream Park. Flashpoint's owner is trying to negotiate with GP an increase in the Swale pure from $150,000 to 1 million dollars. The Factor's connection's said they will be there if he can get the purse increased to 1 million. TJ

I think someone done gone and raided the crack jar. Fort has his sights set on the Derby, why in the blue hell would you go into the derby off of a six furlong and 2 seven furlongs? This is craziness

LOL!! Let's hope he doesn't pull this off and win the Derby. Then everyone will be going to Churchill off a couple of sprint preps..

The winner's share of a $1 million purse should earn a place in the gate. You just know they won't pass on a chance.

rotfl

I actually think this has a chance of happening if they will up the money.

I think bob knows the factor is not a legit derby horse. IF he's a sprinter, why not run in a 1 million dollar restricted sprint race? that you should win at that.

If Baffert thinks The Factor is a pure sprinter, he has nothing to lose. The one who has to lose something is Flashpoint. If he is aiming for the derby, why potentially compromise this horses future for an ego trip? I personally love this horse and have him in my top 5. He was wanting more at the end of the hutcheson and was stretching out past the wire. Plus he rated like a pro throughout the whole race. If this race does happen, invite Runflatout also and Fort Hughes. I just dont see Gulfstream upping the ante to a million for a sprint race though.

If fort huges, the factor and flashpoint were all in the same race they could very well break the 1:08 mark for 6F

What Ricky is actually saying is what are we gonna do....go one turn or two? He will nominate the horse to everything. He isn't as gun ho about running back 7/8ths as Baffert and the two owner's are.....it's not about the money, it's about winning the Derby if they decide to go. If he's going to the Derby he prefer's to pick the easiest 2 turn Graded Stake race he can find, that's why he's nominating him to everything.....including the Swale. TJ
