I need a racing partnership contract

Postby madelyn » Thu Mar 31, 2011 9:06 am

I've got a pal who has a track at his farm and we have worked out a deal for him to train one or two of my horses for half of the horse's earnings.

Does anyone have a sample contract for a racing partnership like that? Do we put a time limit on it? Split vet bills? Have a clause protecting him in the event the horse gets sold?

There are plenty of sample contracts available on-line. I googled partnerships and a great many sites appeared.

I forgot to say that none of the partnership contracts were specific to your requirements. Why don't you just use a trainer contract for each specific horse and set the period of time and terms of future compensation in that.

I have a similar partnership with a couple of my mares but it's all verbal..

I understand good fences make good neighbors but have never had any problem that could not be resolve with common sense

Madelyn
with all due respect to Griff who is a great contributor to the forum...
GET A CONTRACT.
You can bank on there being "misunderstandings" in the future leading to major problems.
When it comes to deals like this, you will find out how quickly pals can become enemies.
Common sense and doing the right thing are long forgotten.

not if you oick your parttners..

Nothing wrong with a written contract but I' din't think you can write one that coverers everything and in a lot of cases it will come down to just doing the right thing.

Another thought:

I've never had a written contract with a trainer but I a small time owner that races mostly at Charles Town.

However, if written contracts are the norm in KY why not just modify a version of the standard written contract your potential partner presently uses, or one of the written contracts youn have used with other trainers..

Change the 10% fee the trainer usually gets to 50% and change his day rate from $50 a day, or what ever it is, to ZERO dollars a day..

I assume all the other items in the standard written owner/trainer contract would remain the same; if not modify those items as you and your partner agree..
