The Breeders' Cup Limited has announced plans to develop protocols which will eliminate race-day medications in horses competing at the Breeders' Cup World Championships by 2013. The measure was adopted during Thursday's meeting of the group's Board of Directors.
Procedures are expected to be developed that will prohibit the administration of race day medication in 2-year-old races in the 2012 championships. The policy will then be expanded to all championship races in 2013.
"Given the high level of international participation in our championships and the increasing support for our nominations programs throughout the global Thoroughbred breeding and racing community, Breeders' Cup feels strongly that the time has come to modify our medication policies to be consistent with international practices," Breeders' Cup Chairman Tom Ludt said in a statement.
"Breeders' Cup has a longstanding reputation for setting high standards of safety, security and integrity for the participants in our championships and this measure continues that tradition."

Overdue.
American medication policies for graded stakes race are a howling joke elsewhere.
