I found this out, 14% people there want horse racing banned altogether. I find that alarming/new because we always or at least I always looked at them as being more tolerant of the sport since they founded it hundreds of years ago.

Interesting timing as either I saw it here or in my email that there is an Australian study that concluded horses ran faster/better without the use of the whip.

trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while. :)

Leave use of the whip up to trainers, owners and jocks. We do not need more 'oversight' committees.

you can't outlaw whips they are just as much for steering as much as they are for "getting more out the horse".

Objections / inquiry's would be out of control without whips, especially 2YO races

Even if a horse runs faster w/o caning...importance is... when, how and where it starts to run fast...remember..it must
cross the line ahead of others to win.

Next they will have to stop for tea and crumpets before the quarter pole.

All of this excitement would not have been an issue if it were not for the jockeys who use the whip as a weapon of war ,leaving the horse bleeding and scarred under the belly and even on the sheath of geldings and stallions. Add to that the dumbies beating a horse up long after the horse's legs have given way. I am not blowing smoke ,I have seen it with my own eyes. One time I had a cheap mare in at Tampa ,she ran a good 2nd but I could not cool her out as the welts on her belly were stinging her so bad, I never used the jockey again. Yes we do need regulation to curb such abuse, unfortunatley the powers that be have gone overboard but the riders have no one to blame but them selves. The great British rider Lester Piggott was brutally strong with the whip but he would reach right back and slap them good behind his back ,his balance was so good that he could do that! Just watch him, aged 54 reaching back and driving Royal Academy to win the B.C.Mile in1990,I can't give you the video but it's on Youtube if you care to see!

I haven't seen any abuse of that magnitude, though I'm not saying it's impossible.

An 'oversight commitee,' however, is the worst way to go. Everywhere, always, across the board.
