An interesting article about past stakes races run at distances unheard of today--but the answers are on another page, and that page is unavailable!!

I'm only sure of the answer to 3): The Lawrence Realization.

What are the answers to the others? 8)

I am not positive but I think 1. is the Saratoga Cup, 4. is the Pimlico Cup and 5. is the Display.

I think number 2 is the Clark Handicap, so that could be all 5 of them.

I wonder what it would take to get these races back.

First things first, have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year.

The track owners and management will not card races they cannot fill. Even though they are the primary reason there are very few true distance races carded in N.A. Commercial breeders continue to breed for early maturity and that will not change until distance racing becomes financially viable, and I do not think that will happen in my lifetime.

It is akin to racetrack management not advertising the gambling aspect of the sport. Racing is less risky than most other forms of gambling and blows slots and craps and maybe even poker out the window but management fails to take advantage of that. What percentage of patrons attend the races just to watch the pretty horses run? The majority of attendees are there to gamble. Personally, I would much rather handicap a race than play blackjack where the maximum payout is 3-2. I do not understand why management still has their collective heads in the sand.
