Productive Sires

Postby wangkw » Sun Dec 25, 2011 9:38 pm

Who is the highest producer in terms of the number of progeny ?

I hv gone thru the lists...found Saddler's Wells married 1181 wives who at least had delivered once. This excluded those who had never.

He fathered altogether 2161 children, whether or not they have ever been in training (the actual no must be more than this).

I did this search becos I was all along wondering if Sunday Silence was overloaded. By the definition as above, he had 818 wives
producing 1255 children.

SW spent about 23 years (1985 - 2008) in stud compared with SS's 11 (1991 - 2002). SS 1st foal was out in 1986 and SS's in 1992.

Conclusion was that, if I may so say, relatively SS's life was a lot rugged. SW fathered about 95 children each year...SS was higher at 110.

Is there any other sire near them ?

Giant's Causeway who is just 14 years old (and hopefully has many productive years ahead of him) has already sired 1427 foals.

Danehill sired 2,406 foals with 355 stakes winners, might be the all time leader in both aspects.

There's quantity, and then there is quality.

Which sire is trending towards being the most influential, as opposed to the most prolific (and Louis, this is the proper use of "prolific")?

In the case of Danehill...181 copies on average per year...and "strike" rate assumed as 1 in 2..he must be taking
supper everyday for 13 years...no wonder he commited suicide.

Noted longer duty led to lower average..and younger sires foals average are generally higher...albeit not incompatible with human cuycle..but
how long is their prime harvest period ?

I think some of those stallions may have started their careers when books tended to be smaller, so their early numbers (prime years) would have been smaller than many younger stallions starting their careers today.

Then, too, as stallions age, their books generally shrink, because of health/fertility concerns. An old stallion that might have covered 75+ mares in his prime might cover 10 or fewer after he turns 22 or so.

Wow, now after reading your postings I wonder if this kind of live coverage prolongs the life of these sires vis-a-vis inventing a strict institutionalized protocol in which a stallion life covers one mare and two more mares can be impreganated from the same infusion, "in-situ"; under one sole watchdog institution. In a certain way it may sound like
A-I but that's not the purpose. Anyway, analizing this issue from a strict cardiological perspective it sounds like a tough requirement for any sire . In the wild this does not occurrs. Remember that not few sires die this way each year.

High Chapparral

Live foals 488
Stud duty todate 6 years (2005-2011)
Foals per year 81

The 2003 Horse Of The World has four progeny which are o/s, namely So You Think, Descarado, Redwoods and Shoot Out...not a very
successful sire in that regard as compared to his contemporary.

The 1st horse which won 2 times BC Turf (2003 deadheat with Johar). I was in Vancouver Hastings course to see the simucasting of this race
and bet him to win...but as it resulted into a deadheat..I got a very small payout and ended the BC Day a small loss, which I nevertheless
felt great and honored.
