Costs of a Horse in Training

Postby vallygirl927 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 9:23 am

Does anyone have a template showing the costs of having a horse in training at the track that they could send me? My friend may be interested in owning a piece of my yearling filly next year and she asked that I send her something showing the "rough" costs associated with having a horse on the track. I know training farms cost around $55 a day and So Cal trainers at the track can be $75 and up but just wondering what an average amount for farrier, vanning, race fees, and veternarian comes too.

Any help would be appreciated! PM me for my email address.

Thanks!

i don't have a template but here are some costs along with the training

Pre race

vitamins(shot) 25.00
bute(shot) 25.00
Adequan 85.00
lasix 30.00

pony 30.00
groom 50.00 (that depends on the trainer, trainers that charge less day rate may add it)
scope 65.00 (some scope every time horse works)
farrier 150.00 every 4 weeks

it's a good idea to keep horses on adequan weekly, also many horses work on lasix so you can add this as well, if the horse is healthy and have no soundness issues that should be it

Vanning to race is free between SA, HP, Del Mar, and Pomona

Template for keeping a horse in training at a major track:

How much can you reasonably budget for a racehorse?

IT WILL BE A HELL OF A LOT MORE THAN THAT!

Thanks Valjoe. Aren't the pony fees included in the trainer's day rate?

Generally a pony in the morning is included in the training fee but a Pony used in the afternoon for PP and to the gate is a fee usually included in the training bill as a seperate fee.

Depends on where you are and who you use.

Southern California ballpark with a race that month is $3500-4000.

Northern California ballpark is $2500 a month.

At certain levels it can make more sense to be in SoCal (ie purse levels, surface and competition) but I think a lower level horse has the best chance in Northern California when you look at the totality of the costs to potential earnings.
