Here is a trivia question

I am killing time before the NFL draft and I was going back and looking at the epic ghostzapper / st liam race where st liam took ghostzapper like 15 wide and still got beat. st liam and ghostzapper both got a 108 for that race via beyer. st liam really ran too good to lose and wins that race 97 out of 100 times IMHO and more times than not going away that number would have been much higher had he not had to angle ghostzapper out.

so I am wondering, what is the highest beyer speed figure in a losing effort? off the top of my head I would think it was hard spun's breeders cup classic in which I believe he got a 114. I know curlin got a 119 that race.

Pre Beyer era, it would be interesting, if it hasn't already been done, to know what Sham's Beyer was is the Derby considering he has the 2nd fastest derby time in Derby history. It still amazes me that the horse with the 2nd fastest Derby is not a Derby winner.

Beyer wasn't doing numbers then. He did go back and do Sec's but I don't think he did Sham's. That Derby was a couple of years before Beyer got going.

I couldn't find that Beyer in retrospect ever actually created figures for Secretariat's Triple Crown races. Beyer did write: "When I attempt to improvise a figure for Secretariat's record-shattering victory in the Belmont, I estimated that he earned a 139 -- probably the best race ever run."

Steve Roman, using the historical charts available at the DRF Historical Online Archive, projected Performance Figures for Secretariat's Triple Crown races. Beside each PF I've included in parentheses what Roman considers an approximate comparative numerical value for a Beyer Speed Figure (BSF).

Kentucky Derby, PF -97 (BSF-118) ; Preakness Stakes, PF -85 (BSF-112); Belmont Stakes, PF -122 (BSF-127).
