Just won the Met Mile! I'm in a fantasy stable group and he's in my bunch!

This is one of my favorite horses in training today. Tough, gutsy and very fast. Underrated too.. What kind of a stallion might he be? Fast, tough as nails, a classic distance winner and now the Met Mile in 33 and change. Go Shack daddy!!

Unfortunately, he's bound for stud at Darby Dan Farm, once an establishment of quality, now a death sentence for a good horse. IMO the worst management team in KY.

Why would you say that? They are the only farm I know that's ever given away seasons to their stallions for placing in contests that were free to enter. I'm pretty pleased with what I got from it.

They've brought in some new blood in management positions, namely Robert Hammond who never embarrassed himself at Winstar for years. Casner has also started throwing his hat in DD business dealings.

Tapp,

Im not talking about their giveaway seasons. Im referring to what I consider unprofessional treatment of clients (of which I used to be one). Poor communication skills, immature reasoning skills, irresponsible promises and so forth. Management seems to turn over quite a bit which to me illustrates something is amiss at the top level, too.

Other than Claiborne and a few others, second and third generation farm owners just dont seem to bring the sense of purpose their antecedents did. I will not patronize any Darby Dan horse, as well as several other farms who dont treat their clients right.

Is it me, or does Shack run better (in technique) than he used to as a 3YO? He used to look like he was swimming through mud, and swung his front legs to the side oddly. Now he seems to run straighter. Ca they use special shoes to try to correct such gait habits?

They don't seem to stand any stallions that fit in with your business plan though Barc so not sure why you would say you won't deal with them. Their highest price horse right now is less than half what you spend on your other mares.

Actually I like Tale of Ekati a lot, but wont breed to him because of where he stands. Ditto Shackelford. Any farm that doesnt keep its word with clients is not one I want to patronize. Lets just leave it at that.

Darby Dan has been great to deal with for me. I have a gorgeous Tale Of Ekati filly right now and have another mare there being bred back to him. I get emails from then whenever I need to know anything, and if I email them, I get a response back immediately. Ive been very happy with them.

I for one am pleased as punch that Shack is going to Darby Dan. I have found them to be a wonderful farm to deal with at all levels. The staff have been easy to work with, have been very accomodating and very professional. I have not found any issues that have given me any concerns. I have used Darby Dan on numerous occasions. The only fault I could find (if you could find it a fault) would be that they make you handle your mare from the time it gets off the van until it actually walks into the breeding shed. Meaning, you handle your mare in the wash room, the teasing area and walk them down to the breeding barn, which is down a grassy hill area (and in February and March this can be a real PIA). I would have concerns if I sent my mare with a vanning company and didn't take my mares myself, but since I transported my mares to the breeding shed it wasn't an issue, but having someone be that responsible for my mare when they didn't know them (and who may or may not be real experienced) would cause me concern.

I think they'll do a great job getting the right mares to Shack.

I should clarify that my issues with this farm have nothing to do with the office staff or farm employees. Their sales division is handled in an entirely different fashion and it is those personnel who I find unprofessional to a degree I have rarely seen in Kentucky. If I were a stallion owner I would feel good about the care the horse would get at DD but petrified at how he would be managed. It's not surprising that the turnover in the sales dept there is very high; when they fired Susie Oldham it was clear they didnt want respected horsemen there. When they added some of the newer boys they turned Mr. Galbreath's original showplace into a used car lot.
