The 1:46s for 8 furlongs --- why the shortage?

Postby Jorge » Sat Jul 07, 2012 7:03 pm

Mucho Macho Man won the famous Suburban and clicked 1:46.58 for 9 furlongs. Excellent effort!

Now I ask, do you remember the era when great horses (not necessarily the megastars) like Vigors, Exceller and a few other handicap horses clicked similar times more often than today? That was about 30 years ago!

Why today's shortage on the 1:46s for 9 furlongs? Is that a proof that the Thoroughbred breed is too much focused on 6 to 8 furlongs races and that the breeding quality is going down into a spiral --- along with the number of starts per runner!

Would like to read your opinions concentrating on the 9 furlongs races.

What do you think?

Agree with all the above and would add that obviously training methods are no longer geared for anything longer than a mile. A shame. I would like to see a return to the days of old, 150 years ago or so, when 1 1/2 was a short race and 4 milers were in vogue. A mystery to me why the fascination for races that just last a minute seem to be proliferating. Molly and Ten Broeck......that must have been one hell of a race!!! :)

they're breeding stronger faster horses these days imo.

As to the time of the Suburban, unkown but that track looked as if it was playing very fast. Additionally, Mucho Macho Man in his Derby training was galloping farther than almost all the horses in that Derby. The answer comparing times of old to present are speculation unless someone does a study, and to draw conclusions from small sample likely merely leads astray.

i'd suspect the difference in times primarily has to do with track surfaces and track superintendents instructed to keep the race track deep enough to prevent fractures. In 1930, what was a race track? Probably a little bit of sand strown across hard ground.

i don't think that's a legit time. call me a hater, stupid i don't care i dont' buy it. MMM has never been that fast in his entire life and never will be. This is a key race in the sense everyone is going to believe he really is that fast at SAratoga and will get beat at 3/5. if i am wrong i will eat a super-sized crow sammich but i do not think i am.

for him to be that fast i also have to believe hymm book, a horse he hasn't ran step queue outside of gulfstream park is good enough to run a 104 beyer at belmont and id ont' believe that. this, a horse who could not out kick alternation and freaking win willy at oaklawn or endorsement at pimlico. also the track was blazing on the dirt all day long. also emma's encore won the VR in 1:08 and 4 and didn't break a 95 beyer but MMM runs 1:46 and change and cracks a 1:08 please, not buying it.

The mroe i watch racing I know i sound like a nut job, believe i know lol, but.. new york has this thing, they have to have the best horses every year. every year we do this. every year the suburban winner sizzles and fizzles at saratoga. sometimes they really are the best horse, most times I believe they are being propped up. But by the time the Woodward comes along it won't matter beucase whoever wins that race is going to be on everyone's lips they just have to get the Woodward in a this is the best handicap race of the summer anywhere position. every year they want the horses that are at saratoga to be the headline horses in every division. this is how they make that happen. rather they deserve it or not.
